2027 Guber Poll: Adamawa in Search of Grassroots Politician

Victor Kwambuge, PhD

In less than 24 months, the good people of Adamawa State will once again head to the polls to elect a new steward to pilot the affairs of the state for the next four years. This new leader will face a daunting task, as he will be succeeding an excellent performer—His Excellency, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri—who, in the last six years, has ticked all the boxes that define real development.

On multiple occasions, Governor Fintiri has made his stance clear: “My successor must be a grassroots politician.” This simple yet weighty statement has left many political pundits speculating, with some going as far as identifying individuals they believe fit the description. However, whether these predictions are accurate remains to be seen.

Regardless, there is a consensus that the next governor must have an excellent track record of performance and the capacity to build on the solid legacies of the current administration. The truth is, the bar of governance in Adamawa has been raised, and anyone who attempts to lower it will face stiff resistance from all quarters.

To demystify the concept of a grassroots politician, as postulated by Governor Fintiri, we must assess potential candidates based on capacity, character, and competence. The ideal leader must exude dexterity, agility, and adeptness. From the riverine Numan Federation to the swampy plains of Fufore, the sunny valleys of Fombina, the rugged hills of Pakka, and the historic paths of Sukur Kingdom, the next leader must embody the collective aspirations of the people.

The next Governor must possess a deep understanding of development economics to craft sustainable solutions to Adamawa’s fiscal and revenue challenges. He or she must have the intellectual stamina to analyze economic data and indices and how they impact the average citizen. The leader must be in touch with rural farmers to design policies that enhance agricultural productivity. Likewise, a keen understanding of the struggles of traders in remote communities is necessary to empower small and medium-scale enterprises, thereby boosting the state’s economy.

Moreover, Adamawa’s next leader must comprehend the complexities of climate change and global efforts to mitigate its effects. He or she must have a firm grasp of evolving trends in ICT and how young people in the state can leverage technology for empowerment and development.

As a people, we must align with Governor Fintiri’s vision by choosing a grassroots leader who sees our diversity as a strength rather than a divide to exploit. We need a leader whose philosophy is rooted in service delivery, not personal gain—someone who understands the struggles of the common man, has experienced firsthand the absence of basic amenities, and possesses the will and capacity to lift the people out of poverty.

Adamawa must choose wisely.

God bless Adamawa State.

Stop Dangote's Expansion on our Farmlands, Guyuk Communities Beg ADHA

Host Communities of the Dangote Sugar Refinery (DSR) in Guyuk Local Government Areas on Wednesday, begged Adamawa State House of Assembly to stop the DSR's expansion on their farmlands. News Platform

According to the inhabitants of the communities, with the ongoing expansion on their farmlands, there will be no food for them and their wives and children, and that they will die of starvation.

The communities under Kola, Zakawon and Dumna Districts pleaded with the House of Assembly in a Memoranda read and submitted by their Secretary, Hon. Nelson Dalko, to the Ad Hoc Committee of the Assembly on Farmland Dispute headed by the Member representing Maiha constituency, Hon. Ahmed Jingi Belel.

Aside the communities' memeranda, the Lunguda Development Association (LDA), also submitted a supporting memo tagged, "Our Frustration with Dangote Sugar Refinery: The position of LDA on current face-off between DSR and Guyuk Host Community".

It was read and submitted by the National President LDA, and former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Ibrahim Andrew Welye, Kwalmila Nunguraya II, to the Chairman of the House Committee.

The communities under the 3 districts affected by the ongoing expansion work by DSR include Boshikiri, Zakawon, Dumna Burthi, Dumna Zerbu, Dumna Tsalbu, Kerau, Theble and Kola jointly submitted the memo when the committee visited their communities.

While submitting their memoranda on behalf of the Districts Heads, Hon. Nelson Dalko, noted with concern how DSR is trying by all means to displace them of their remaining smaller portion of farmlands.

Hon. Nelson, said that the DSR had pushed them to the wall ; hence, their decision to protest in order to draw the attention of Govemor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and the House of Assembly to their plight.

He told the committee that even when the portion of land DSR is occupying was allocated to it, the company's compensation committee did not visit host communities of Lungada Chiefdom to pay compensation.

According to him, their communities did not see any effort by the DSR to provide social amenities such as feeder roads, clinics or dispensaries, schools, water supply, employment opportunities and scholarship scheme among others for over 50 years.

He pleaded with the government to ask the DSR to compensate them on the existing land it is currently occupying, and vowed to resist further expansion on their farmlands.

Hon. Nelson, further pleaded that the status quo should be maintained, and urged the lawmakers and Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, to intervene in order to end the dispute.

On his part, the National President LDA, Chief Ibrahim A. Welye, Kwalmila Nunguraya II, commended the House of Assembly for setting up the committee and also appreciated the committee's time and effort in addressing their grievances.

Chief Welye, informed the committee that in the interest of peace, the LDA aligns with the immediate host communities in demanding that DSR remove machinery and restore the farmlands, and appealed to the Governor to intervene to prevent further conflict.

"The refusal of DSR to respond to these correspondences has led to the perception of deprivation and misfortune among the Lunguda Community as a direct result of DSR's operations.

"Rather than address our concerns, DSR has resorted to divisive tactics, revealing the contents of our communications to neighboring host communities, potentially fostering disunity.

"DSR's role in escalating tensions with the Lunguda host communities is troubling. Following a tripartite meeting held on 19th November, 2024 involving DSR, the host communities, and Governor Fintiri, we submitted a memorandum outlining demands for DSR to engage Lunguda host communities before any operation affecting farmlands. Despite this, DSR proceeded without consultation or engagement". He lamented.

Several people who spoke including the Chairman Guyuk LGC, Barr. Kassa Shallom who was represented, Administrator Guyuk Development Area, Dr. John Pwari, representative of youth, Wantu Dumna among others thanked the lawmakers for their effort to resolve the lingering dispute.

They appealed to House of Assembly to direct DSR to stop expansion until the resolution of the matter by host communities and relevant authorities.

Addressing the communities earlier, the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee and the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Ahmed Jingi Belel (Maiha), said that the committee was constituted and mandated to come receive their complaints pertaining their dispute with DSR.

Hon. Ahmed, said that the member representing them raised the matter of public concern affecting them as a result of which the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley, mandated them to receive their complaints so as to proffer a lasting solution.

He commended the traditional institutions for their role in the maintenance of peace and stability, and called on the inhabitants of the chiefdom to continue to support them.

The legislator pledged the committee's commitment to do justice to all their grievances so as to ensure peace between the host communities and the DSR.

Kwandi Nunguraya told the committee that during the November 2024 meeting chaired by the Governor, his humble self snd other Paramount Rulers made submissions on the grievances and the demands of their people and that correspondences to that effect are going on.

The membership of the Ad Hoc committee include Hon. Ahmed Jingi Belel (Chairman), Hon. Sunday Peter (Guyuk), Hon. Pwamwakeno Mackondo (Numan), Hon. Kantomon Bulus Naftali (Shelleng) and Hon. Bauna Myandasa (Lamurde ).

Sen Amos Yohanna’s One and Half Year in Office: Setting the Records Straight

In exactly a month from today, Distinguished Senator Amos K. Yohanna will clock one and Half Year in Office having been sworn in as Senator, representing the great people of Adamawa North Senatorial District at the National Assembly. His stewardship at the Upper Chamber has been eventful and filled with impacts, as he without any waste of time hit the ground running and has ticked all the boxes that make up a sound Legislative Representation as enshrined in Section 4 of the Nigerian Constitution.

Typical of a Political setting like ours, some arm chair critics have emerged, either out of sheer ignorance or orchestrated attempt to mislead the public, to dish out fallacious narratives claiming that the Adamawa North Senator has not ‘’Passed’’ a single Bill since his emergence on October 25, 2023 even when it was widely reported weeks ago that his Bills have successfully passed first reading and they are ready for the Second.

For the purpose of clarification and public education, it is imperative to enlighten these individuals that it is not the responsibility of the Legislature to Pass a Bill into Law. That is the sole prerogative of the Executive arm of government. The Constitution empowers the Senators, Members of the House of Representatives or the House of Assembly (at the State levels) to sponsor Legislations in the form of Bills or Motions. These Bills pass through some stages; First and Second Readings, Committee Stage, Third Reading, before passing it to the President or Governor for assent before passing it into Law. Where these persons learnt that the Senators or Members can Pass Laws is a big mystery to be uncovered. It is either they were wrongly taught or they have an agenda they are pushing at this moment.

For the records, Senator Yohanna’s two Bills are currently awaiting second Reading and these two will certainly not be the last. Succinctly put, his Bill on Public Infrastructure Maintenance, 2025 seeks to establish a formidable legal and legislative framework that ensures that public facilities in Nigeria are not only properly maintained but also governed by clear regulations to prevent misuse and deterioration. Apparently, the benefit of this Bill is, when passed, it will enhance the longevity of critical national assets, ultimately fostering Sustainable Development in Nigeria.

On the other hand, the Federal University of Agriculture Act Amendment Bill is designed to provide the newly established Federal University of Agriculture Mubi with the necessary legal backing for its seamless operation. Hitherto, this new citadel of learning was only established by an Executive Fiat, with no Legislation to back its creation or continuous operations. The Distinguished Lawmaker in a proactive move, swiftly moved to fill this gap with the objective of leaving no stone unturned for this promising Institution.

It is important at this juncture to reiterate that at the core of his One and Half Year in Office, the Distinguished Senator is ONLY focused in providing quality representation to the people of Adamawa North and he will not be distracted by these kinds of narratives that are only out to smear, malign and find dust where there is none. His Political brand represents a big paradigm shift from the old order to a new normal only characterized by prioritizing the needs of his Constituents. It is not about sending out empty, misleading and divisive propaganda; it’s about restoring the dignity of his people, the lives he touches and the smiles he ignites.

AUN Students Tackle Climate Change with Tree Planting, Water Solutions

A group of 15 students from the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, has taken bold steps to combat climate change and promote peaceful coexistence through a transformative project under the banner Ubuntu for Peace.

With increasing environmental challenges and conflicts over scarce resources, the affected students are tackling three critical issues; deforestation, water scarcity and the farmer/herder clashes by engaging local communities in sustainable solutions.

The initiative, themed Common Ground, focuses on tree planting and water provision as essential tools for climate resilience. Across many communities in Nigeria, deforestation has left landscapes barren, exposing residents to extreme temperatures and reduced agricultural productivity.

The loss of trees has not only led to environmental degradation but also heightened tensions between farmers and herders over dwindling resources.

Recognizing the urgent need for action, the students have launched a tree-planting campaign to restore green cover, reduce the impact of heat, and contribute to long-term ecological balance.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative, which was held at the Law School of the American University of Nigeria, the faculty advisor of the project, Prof. Peter Kenger, commended the students for their dedication and resilience.

He applauded their commitment to providing sustainable water solutions, preserving the environment, and fostering peaceful coexistence among local communities.

"Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and the work these students are doing is not only commendable but necessary," Prof. Kenger said. "By planting trees, they are helping to restore degraded land, improve air quality, and combat rising temperatures.

Their water provision efforts will ensure that communities facing scarcity have access to this essential resource. Most importantly, they are promoting peace by showing that natural resources should unite rather than divide us."

Through extensive community engagement, the team has mapped out key locations where tree planting will have the most impact. Their goal is to encourage residents to view trees as a shared asset—one that provides shade, prevents soil erosion, improves air quality, and enhances agricultural yield. The initiative goes beyond simply planting trees; it includes educating communities, especially schoolchildren, about the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable land use.

In addition to tree planting, the project is addressing one of the most pressing needs in rural communities—access to clean water. Many communities in Adamawa State, despite being near the River Benue, lack safe drinking water for daily use. The students discovered through a needs assessment that many locals prefer wells over boreholes due to maintenance challenges. As part of their initiative, they are digging new wells and repairing broken boreholes to ensure sustainable water access.

Giwa Temilulowa Subedat, the project’s report manager, described the experience as both challenging and rewarding.

"This is a new opportunity for us to learn and gain valuable experiences. We've faced challenges, but we remain optimistic," she said. "We are still on the borderline trying to figure out the best strategy, but we are confident that our tree planting and water solutions will have a lasting impact. Climate change has made extreme heat a serious problem, and our work will help mitigate that. We also believe that communication is crucial, so we are ensuring that dialogue is an essential part of this initiative. Every party involved should be represented properly because our goal is not just to plant trees and provide water but to build understanding and cooperation."

The Ubuntu for Peace team believes that climate action is inseparable from community well-being. By restoring forests and ensuring water availability, they are not only mitigating the effects of climate change but also reducing conflict over resources.

The project has attracted international support, with partnerships from the Earth Venture initiative in the United States and the Manara Centre for Coexistence in Abu Dhabi. The team is set to travel to Abu Dhabi to present their progress, seeking further support to expand their impact. If successful, they plan to return and introduce additional sustainability measures to reinforce their climate action efforts.

The students acknowledge the challenges ahead but remain determined. Their optimism is fueled by a deep belief in the power of collective action. They hope that their efforts will serve as a blueprint for others to follow, demonstrating that environmental stewardship and peacebuilding can go hand in hand.

The bill which is at the final stage of legislative processes was sponsored by Hon. Yohanna Sahabo, aimed at curtailing climate change effects on the planet earth which pose a threat to human existence.

Man, 35, Defiles 5 Yr-Old Girl in Adamawa

Adamawa State Police Command has apprehended a 35-year-old man, Abdullaziz Mohammed, for allegedly defiling a 5-year-old in Mubi North Local Government Area.

The arrest followed a complaint lodged by the victim’s father at the Mubi North Divisional Police Headquarters as contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje.

The father had reported that on the 17th March, 2025, the suspect lured his daughter into his grinding engine shop located at Kasuwan Borkono, Mubi North, and had unlawful carnal knowledge of her knowing fully well that she is a minor.

He said after receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, deployed operatives attached to the Mubi Division for immediate action and succeeded in arresting the suspect.

"The victim was immediately rushed to the medical facility in Mubi for medical examination and treatment". He said

According to him, during interrogation the suspect confessed to committing the crime and is currently in police custody for investigation.

Numan Ministers' Forum Pleads with Fintiri to Grant Clemency to Sunday Jackson

A body of clergy men and women known as Numan Ministers' Forum, Adamawa state headed by Archbishop Japhet Tonmwoso has described the Supreme Court ruling that sentenced Mr Sunday Jackson to death by hanging as a miscarriage of justice, having defended himself from the attack of a herdman who died on the process

The forum narrated that Mr Sunday Jackson was diligently tending to his farm, his primary source of livelihood when a Fulani herder drove his cattle onto the farmland, causing great damage to the crop he had laboured to cultivate.

In the ensuing confrontation, Mr Jackson acted out of fear for his life and property was compelled to defend himself after the herder stabbed him twice on his back and leg.

He empowered the herder, retrieved his knife and used same in self defense which tragically resulted in the loss of the life of the herder

While emphasizing that the Nigeria's constitution (1999 as amended) and the Criminal Code of Nigeria recognize the right of individuals to defend themselves against unlawful attacks, the forum of Pastors and Bishops posited that Sunday Jackson's actions were neither premeditated, nor motivated by malice but purely protecting his life in an increasingly volatile security situation where farmers have suffered repeated attacks and destruction of crops

Expressing their position through the leader of the forum Archbishop Tonmwoso, the clergy men faulted the court judgement that Mr Sunday Jackson should have run away from the scene after retrieving the knife from the herder, rather than retaliating.

This claim according to the forum assumes that Mr Sunday Jackson, who has already been stabbed in the back and on his leg was in any condition to escape the scene

The forum therefore called on Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa state to graciously invoke his constitutional power of clemency under section 212 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) to grant full pardon or conditional, commute the sentence to a lesser punishment or exercise his prerogative of Mercy to commute the sentence in the interest of justice, equity, magnanimity and humanity.

To this end, the forum explained that the case is a matter of concern to it as the unfortunate incident took place in its locality.

Hon. Emmanuel Kefas, informed them that they reason why they could not get new District when additional districts were created by the government is because of their differences on the name and headquarters of the District.
