Adamawa Chief Judge Assures YEDC of Legal Backing

The Chief Judge of Adamwa State has assured YEDC of the full backing of the law provided all the Company’s engagements are lawful.

This was expressed when the Management Team of Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC), led by the MD/CEO, Engr. Abdulrahman Isa, Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to her office at the at the Adamawa State High Court Complex.

During the visit, Engr. Isa highlighted the challenges faced by YEDC in its operations, particularly in distributing electricity across four states under its jurisdiction.

He explained that YEDC receives 3.5% of the total power generated nationally, which must be distributed equitably across the states, while also converting the service into monetary value.

“The poverty line is high, and with insecurity and economic hardship people are focused on basic survival first. However, we must deliver electricity services because failure to do so would collapse the value chain and strain economic activities in the region.” Engr. Isa stated.

He further discussed the transition from government-subsidized tariffs to the current service-reflective tariff structure.

“The shift came at a difficult time when resources are scarce, leading to widespread energy theft, vandalization of infrastructure for economic gain, and even assaults on our personnel.

"Despite these challenges, we are grateful that when we appear before the courts, we receive justice. We appreciate Your Lordship's role in ensuring fairness.” Isa added.

In her response, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman reassured YEDC of the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the law.

“We follow the law. You will have our full cooperation as long as you work within the ambit of the law. Do the right thing and follow the rule of law.

Most of your cases that we see show that you are always on the right side of the law.” She affirmed.

YEDC’s franchise areas include Adamawa, Borno, Taraba and Yobe States.

His Royal Majesty Gubo Johnson Dio Matalo, Gubo Yungur I

By Akeweta Emmanuel JP PhD

The 26th Paramount Ruler of the His Royal Majesty Gubo Johnson Dio Matalo. Gubo Yungur I

The 26th Paramount Ruler of the Yungur Chiefdom

The Yungur Chiefdom after 6 decades of loss!

The Yungur Chiefdom stands as one of the oldest and most historically significant traditional institutions in Adamawa State, with a heritage spanning nearly three centuries. Established as a well-organised and self-governing entity, the Chiefdom flourished under the reign of its paramount rulers, known as the Gubo Yungur, who provided leadership, stability, and direction to the Yungur people.

Throughout its long history, 25 paramount rulers guided the Chiefdom with wisdom and strength, up until 1959, when the colonial administration, in its characteristic strategy of suppressing indigenous governance, confiscated the staff of authority.

This marked the beginning of a period of decline in the Chiefdom's traditional autonomy. By 1960, the once-powerful Yungur Chiefdom was officially reduced to a mere district, effectively dissolving the institution of paramount rulership and altering the socio-political structure of the Yungur people.

Despite these challenges, the legacy of past rulers remained a source of strength. Among the renowned Gubo Yungur were:

- Gubo Yakusum (1823–1863), A leader known for his wisdom and commitment to unity.

- Gubo Yongon (1869–1879), A courageous and strategic ruler who strengthened the Chiefdom’s defences.

- Gubo Augeredya (1897–1910), A diplomatic and visionary leader celebrated for his foresight.

- Gubo Agbalan Augubakla (1914–1929, 1947–1959), A symbol of resilience who fiercely defended Yungur heritage and customs.

YUNGUR CHIEFDOM'S HISTORY OF AUTONOMY AND LEADERSHIP

By Calvin Anadion Lawan

For nearly five centuries, the Yungur Chiefdom has stood as a testament to resilience, governance, and cultural strength. Led by the Gubo, who served as both Paramount Ruler and High Priest, our Chiefdom had an efficient administrative system that underscored its autonomy and unity.

Supported by the Pagubsa (Council of Kingmakers), the Gubo presided over three major chiefdoms: Ditera, Waltadi, and Suktu. Of these, Gubo Ditera held the most prominence due to the historical role it played in the first settlement from Mokan, also occupying vast lands, and its significant population.

Our people have long been recognized for our resilience.

In 1911, G.B. Webster wrote:

"They are a fine, hardy race. Even when defeated in battle, every man walked away from our troops, but no man ran. The Fulani could not touch them, and they were a terror to many neighboring tribes. They are intelligent, moral, and, when sober, fairly tractable."

The Gubo, as paramount ruler and high priest, underwent rigorous and mysterious tests to ascend to leadership, including escaping from locked rooms and transforming into various forms such as a snake, leopard, fire, or water. These rituals symbolized the Gubo's readiness to lead and protect the Chiefdom.

The Yungur Chiefdom led by Ditera has had 29 generations of Gubos from two ruling clans: Mwapa (Laro) and Bate (Dirma).

These clans were the original scouts during the migration from Mokan, settling near the Ditera mountains. Below is the roll call of Yungur Gubos and their years of reign:

1. Gubo Manta (1st)

2. Gubo Karikei (2nd)

3. Gubo Gindfiro (3rd)

4. Gubo Beu (4th)

5. Gubo Mwanwa (5th)

6. Gubo Whauwa (6th)

7. Gubo Gule (7th)

8. Gubo Wenikon (8th) (1163–1692)

9. Gubo Dimsin (9th) (1692–1812)

10. Gubo Kitirke (10th) (1812–1743)

11. Gubo Demse (11th) (1743–1789)

12. Gubo Dewe (12th) (1784–1810)

13. Gubo Kibpwarad (13th) (1810–1812)

14. Gubo Ndakim (14th) (1812–1823)

15. Gubo Yakusum (15th) (1823–1863)

16. Gubo Bamsin (16th) (1863–1869)

17. Gubo Yongon (17th) (1869–1879)

18. Gubo Trawello (18th) (1879–1882)

19. Gubo Milakbe (19th) (1882–1887)

20. Gubo Aubatum (20th) (1887–1897)

21. Gubo Auferedya (21st) (1897–1910)

22. Gubo Dingene Bamsin (22nd) (1910–1912)

23. Gubo Amakaro Bamsin (23rd) (1912–1914)

24. Gubo (B)agbalan Augubakla (24th) (1914–1929) – Known for fiercely defending Yungur culture and spirituality.

25. Gubo Warma Konkau I (25th) (1929–1934)

26. Gubo Tomdiyo Gido (26th) (1934–1947)

27. Gubo (B)agbalan Augubakla (27th) (1947–1961)

28. Gubo Samdango Kanikanan (28th) (1961–1961)

29. Gubo Alam Tomdiyo (29th) (1961–1962) – Stripped of his staff of office and reduced to District Head of Ditera after colonial restructuring.

After decades of political fragmentation, the Yungur Chiefdom has been restored. Gubo Johnson Diyo Matalo, the 30th Gubo, has been officially recognized by the Adamawa State Government and will soon be crowned as Paramount Ruler, ushering in a new era of leadership.

In 1935, Colonial Senior Archivist Michael Vonyiri recommended establishing the Yungur Federation with Gubo Ditera as President-in-Council, supported by senior Pagubsa from Dirma, Laro, and Pulle, along with the Gubos of Waltadi and Suktu. This vision of unity remains a powerful symbol of our Chiefdom’s historical governance system.

The above highlights our Chiefdom’s remarkable political and cultural legacy, showcasing how our governance structure has endured since the 16th century.

With the restoration our leadership, we stand poised to embrace a future rooted in their proud history and enduring unity.

Dr. Edgar Amos Sunday: A Leader to Emulate

By Peter Cheman Koti

Dr. Edgar Amos is a distinct individual who has made a lasting impact in Adamawa State, serving as both a civil servant and the Chief of Staff to the state government. His dedication to public service is inspiring, and his leadership skills are exceptional.

As a seasoned public servant, Dr. Amos rose through the ranks to become the Head of Civil Service in Adamawa State.

His tenure as National President of the Nigeria Veterinary Society was marked by transformative reforms that profoundly impacted the association. That's how he honed his leadership skills.

Dr. Amos's commitment to meritocracy and his resistance to tribalism, religious fanaticism, and sentimentality sets him apart.

He served under two executive governors as the Head of Civil Service and was later appointed as the Chief of Staff to the state government, proving his exceptional abilities and the trust placed in him by Governor Fintiri.

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

Dr. Amos's leadership philosophy centers around efficiency, competence, and a strong belief in destiny and God. He remains focused and determined, unswayed by pressure or the desire to impress.

Nelson Mandela's words also describe Dr. Amos's character: "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." Dr. Amos's ability to rise from setbacks has been instrumental in his growth.

Dr. Edgar is a perfect gentleman, humble, and dedicated to public service. His humility, competence and character inspires many.

Many people assume becoming the Chief of Staff means wealth hence the unprecedented financial demands, but Dr. Amos is a salaried public servant committed to serving the people, not personal gain.

Mahatma Gandhi's quote resonates with Dr. Amos's leadership style: "Be the change you wish to see in the world."

Dr. Amos's exceptional leadership and commitment to public service should serve as a practical example to aspiring public servants and leaders.

His legacy will continue to inspire and motivate others to emulate his selfless dedication to serving the people of Adamawa State.
