SENATE HALTS FG's PLAN TO REMOVE ELECTRICITY SUBSIDY

The Senate has halted the Federal Government's plan to remove electricity subsidy as well as increase electricity tariff.

The Upper Legislative Chamber halted the plan to withdraw electricity subsidy through a motion it has adopted at plenary in Abuja on Wednesday.

The motion was captioned “Planned Increase in Electricity Tariff and Arbitrary Billing of Unmetered Customers by Distribution Companies (DisCos)” brought under matters of urgent public importance by Sen. Aminu Iya Abbas (PDP Adamawa) and 10 co-sponsors

Sen. Iya Abbas, said it was worrisome to hear of the plan to increase electricity tariff by the relevant statutory authority in spite increased economic challenges with attendant widespread poverty and high cost of living in Nigeria.

He claimed that the minister of power was reported to have said that “The nation must begin to move towards a cost-effective tariff model, as the country was currently indebted with N1.3 trillion naira to Generating Companies (GenCos) and $1.3 billion owed gas companies.

According to Sen. Iya Abass, the minister had said that more than N2 trillion was needed for subsidy, but only N450 billion was budgeted in 2024.

“The Senate may further note that the same electricity businesses are collecting money from customers for services not rendered, when they have not added anything to the equipment, they inherited from Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

“Communities buy transformers to replace damaged ones in addition to over-burden bills and arbitrary estimates for unmetered customers.

“This is taking place in a country where the greater number of the population is living below the poverty level, with stagnant wages, rising inflation and depreciating currency, the prospect of higher electricity bill is unattainable,” Abbas said.

He said that arbitrary energy charges on unmetered customers had become worrisome given Feb.2024 report of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on non-compliance with energy billing caps by DisCos and penalty of N10.5 billion imposed on DisCos that over-billed its unmetered customers

Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation who is the District Head of Yadafa, Alh. Abubakar Bello Galadima, appealed to the Speaker and other lawmakers to champion their course particularly on the road Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri's intervention.

According to him, the road holds significant economic importance, serving as a vital road for the transportation of agricultural produce, facilitating the movement of people, enhancing security and boosting a rich historical legacy.

He said that it will also serve as an important bypass for the transportation of cattle from the new International Cattle Market in Mubi as well as diverting traffic from the congested Mubi Mararraba - Yola Road, explaining that it will also reduce the occurrence of accidents along the road.

He added that the road is a shorter and more efficient road to Yola, from Mubi, and that its rehabilitation would not only enhance connectivity between the 3 districts but also increase revenue, and foster regional economic growth and development.

"Regrettably, the current state of the road renders it impassable during the rainy season, severely limiting its usage only in the dry season. This does not only obstructs the smooth flow of goods and services but also hampers socio-economic activities in the affected areas.

"We respectfully appeal to the government to kindly prioritise the rehabilitation and construction of the road. We believe that it could be effectively executed through initiatives such as the Rural Access Mobility Programme (RAMP) or other viable alternatives," he stated.

ADHA PASSES RESOLUTIONS TO RESCUE JADA SCH OF THE BLIND, DEAF

Adamawa State House of Assembly has passed 4 Points resolutions aimed at rescuing the special school of the blind, deaf as well as dump located in Jada Local Government Area. News Platform

Part of the resolutions is directing the Ministry of Education as well as the Post Primary Schools Management Board to ensure that only qualified and specially trained teachers are employed or deployed to the school.

The hallowed chamber equally urged government to stop the redeployment of qualified teachers to other normal schools considering the fact that the special school is faced with shortage of qualified teachers.

The legislators further prayed the government to provide adequate and relevant learning and instructional materials specially designed to assist the comprehension of the blind, deaf and dump.

Furthermore, the assembly mandated the House Standing Committee on Education to properly incorporate the needs of the special school in the current bill before it, ie a bill for a law to provide for teachers recruitment, deployment and retention scheme in the state.

The resolutions followed a matter of urgent public importance on the need to employ special and qualified teathers for Jada Special School by the Deputy Speaker and Member representing Jada Mbulo constituency, Hon. Muhammed Buba Jijiwa.

The Deputy Speaker moved for the suspension order 40 sub-rule 1 and 2 of the Rules of this House and presented his matter of public concern.

Hon. Jijiwa, told his colleagues that school was established primarily to train People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) such as the blind, deaf, dump in the society to enable them become self reliant and contribute meaningfully to the development of the society.

The lawmaker stated that the school is currently battling with some challenges such as lack enough teachers, recruitment and deployment.

He said that there is the need for the recruitment and or deployment of highly trained teachers to the school especially those trained to teach the special students and provision of adequate learning and instructional materials.

He told his colleagues that the school is suffering from inadequate trained teachers to teach the People Living with Disabilities in the school simply because the qualified ones were taken to other schools either on redeployment or lobbying to teach in other schools where there are no students with disabilities.

According to him, the transfer to and from the school is being abused in such a manner that qualified ones were taken out from the school to the normal schools ones where there are no special students.

"If something serious is not done to curtail the unfortunate situation in Jada special school, it will soon be rendered unable to discharge its mandate of its establiment. Right now, the school is left with little or no qualified teacher to teach the blind, deaf and the dump.

"Finally, in the light of the foregoing, Mr. Speaker, and in order to bring sanity in the employment, redeployment and recruitment procedure in Jada Special School, I move that this Hon. House to do consider my motion and pass".

Some of the lawmakers who welcomed the motion, commended the lawmaker for bringing up the matter, and threw their weight behind it.

DANGOTE CEMENT TRUCKS WRONGLY INTERCEPTED IN ADAMAWA-MGT

The Management of Dangote Cement Plc has stated that two of its trucks that were wrongly intercepted in Adamawa State have been released.

The company stated that the two trucks loaded with 900 bags of cement each from the Obajana Cement Plant were on their way to Jamtari, Maiha Local Government, Adamawa State, based on a customer’s request.

However, they were intercepted by security agents who accused them of trying to export banned products to the Republic of Cameroun through the Adamawa routes.

The interception, on Friday, February 9, 2024, followed an executive order banning the transportation of food and building materials across the country's border through Adamawa routes by the Adamawa State Government.

A statement signed by the Group's Chief Branding and Communication Officer, Mr. Anthony Chiejina, revealed that the company has a functional cement plant in Cameroun and that, the allegation of attempting to export cement there is false and malicious.

Chiejina explained that the two trucks were on their way to deliver products requested by a customer and wondered why the security agents would intercept and accuse them of attempting to divert their load to the Republic of Cameroun.

Mr. Chiejina said: “It was surprising that on their way to deliver the products to the stated address, the security agents on that particular route intercepted them at a village called Wurolabi.”

He said the officers who made the arrest insisted the trucks were on diversion since they apparently did not pay attention to details of what was written on the Waybill. The company said the two drivers tried to explain to the soldiers but to no avail.

He added: Our officials were thereafter invited by the DSS Adamawa State, and we explained to them the true position of things.  We had to show them the tracking movement of the trucks from the DCP Obajana to the last point where they were arrested by the soldiers, to convince them that the trucks were not crossing to the republic of Cameroon as was being wrongfully insinuated by some media.

In the same vein, the Government of Adamawa State, in a press briefing with the Adamawa State Police Headquarters, also on Friday 16th Feb confirmed that both trucks were intended to deliver within the state and were escorted by police to deliver the products to the customer.
