ADAMAWA TEACHERS MARK DAY, SEEK BETTER WELFARE




Teachers in Adamawa State have joined their counterparts across the globe in marking 2022 World Teachers Day with a call on the government to improve on their welfare.


The teachers appealed to the government to implement new minimum wage of more especially teachers in Primary Schools which their counterparts in Post Primary Schools are enjoying since 2019.


More so, the teachers urged the government to commence implementation of promotion to teachers in Primary Schools, payment of professional allowance of 27.5% to teachers who acquired requisite professional qualifications to boost their morale.


Additionally, the teachers pleaded with the present administration to elongate 5 years of service so as to cover all categories of teachers across Adamawa State.


Addressing the teachers at the Ribadu Square, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, congratulated all teachers across the world for the celebration of a profession which transcends nobility to humanity. 


Governor Fintiri, who was represented the Secretary to tge State Governmernt, Ahmad Bashir, described teachers as the sum total of knowledge, wisdom, experience, kindness, discipline and compassion, an intellectuals and spiritual guides who mentors students with the purest intention of seeing them spreading their wings to the skies. 


He told them that as far as this government is concerned, nothing is too much for the teachers,  and that it will continue to do more even with the limited resources available to improve their condition of service.


"We have commenced the surgical transformation of our education sector by investing heavily on the learning infrastructure of our school system and provision of teaching aides and furniture to both primary and secondary schools",  Fintiri said.


He stated that they have accessed and utilized UBEC funding which has resulted in the construction of about 10,000 classrooms in various schools, and religiously committed to the payment of WAEC and NECO fees, adding that they have re-introduced a balanced feeding programme in our boarding schools with strict supervision.


Speaking earlier, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT) Adamawa State Wing, Comrade Rodney Nathan, thanked Fintiri, for his continued attendance to their occasions more especially World Teachers Day.


Com. Rodney, applauded him for honest approach to education related issues in the where he deals directly with reality without any political inclination or sentiment, and appreciated him for declaring October,  5th as work free day to teachers across the state.


He noted that the day is celebrated across the globe to commemorate the contributions of teachers in global affairs, peace building and innovation, saying that the working condition of the teacher is the learning condition of a child.


According to him, Fintiri, has given the NUT and by extension teachers a pride in education sector in the country for being the 1st Governor to approve the extension of additional 5 years of service for science and language teachers.


"The leadership of NUT and its members are also grateful for the recent promotion of primary teachers in the State as well as appointment of our members as Permanent Secretaries" Rodney added.


He stressed the need for synergy in order to attend the set objectives of education for all, pointing out that all hands must be on deck to ensure that they bequath to this generation and generations yet unborn a functional education system that can stand the test of time and meet the yearnings and aspirations of their people.


Comrade Rodney Nathan, disclosed that no amount of incentive or encouragement given to a teacher that is commensurate to the wotk he she does, and called on governments at all levels to continue to do the needful in order to uplift the living condition of the teachers so as to put them at par with other workers in other sectors.
