It may not be business as usual as the new House Standing Committee on Education of the Adamawa state House of Assembly has vowed to assess the performance of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) under the committee on monthly and quarterly basis.
The committee declared that it will demand for the submission of progress and financial reports on the education sector on monthly and quarterly basis, so as to know exactly what is happening in the sector, saying it is a deliberate effort by the new committee to turn around the standard of education in the state.
The Chairman of the Committee and Member representing Hong constituency, Hon. Bathiya Westley, stated this shortly after the inauguration of his committee by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas.
Hon. Bathiya, told the speaker and the gathering that his committee had designed the standard tracking mechanism in line with international best practice through constant monitoring of capital projects in the sector.
However, he warned the proprietors of unregistered private schools in the state to desist from what he described as ugly trend an obtain permission from the appropriate authorities before establishing such schools, cautioning tertiary institutions that generate and consume to avoid such practice, as the committee will ensure zero tolerance on corruption in the sector under his watch.
He described education as a means for developing individuals and preparing them for a meaningful and fulfilled life, adding that it is the means through which society can develop and harness its human and material resources, improve the society itself and enhance quality of life.
The lawmaker observed that he is always disturbed whenever he sees children roam about streets begging for alms during school hours, advocating for urgent action to create a conducive environment where each and every pupil will be enrolled to school.
He appealed to the government not pay lip service to the problems in the sector and however urged on all critical stakeholders in the sector to strive hard in ensuring that citizens acquire both formal education and skill necessary for the service of the state and for self accomplishments.
According to him, the task ahead the committee is enormous and that decisive steps must be taken if the sector must be resuscitated, calling all the ministries, boards, parastatal under the committee to cooperate and support his committee by working from strength to strength towards uplifting the standard of education in the state.
Educational development in the state, according to him, can only be realised if only they put heads together in ensuring adequate budgetary provisions and prompt release of funds to the sector.
He informed his MDAs that his committee will soon undertake a familiarisation tour to their respective organisations so as to see things for itself, and thanked the speaker for appointing and inaugurating him and other members of his committee.
Hon. Bathiya Westley equally appreciated the principal officers of the MDAs that graced the occasion, and explained that their presence was a source of encouragement to them.
Earlier, speaking while inaugurating the committee, the Speaker of the house Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, charged the committee members to discharge their constitutional responsibility without fear or favour.
Rt. Hon. Iya Abbas, stated that the committee has not been inaugurated to witchunt anybody, but turn things around in the sector, pledging the readiness of the house to support the committee to enable it deliver on its assignment.
