No fewer than 27 School Administrators as well as Education Duty Bearers in Yola North and Yola South LGAs of Adamawa state respectively, were trained on Gender Responsive Pedagogy.
The participants were equipped with the needed knowledge of gender responsive teaching and learning methods and processes, especially on factoring in the specific needs of boys, girls and the vulnerable students in the entire teaching and learning process.
The 3-Day Workshop was a Self-funded Intervention organised by Alimat Care Foundation with technical support from Forum for Africa Women Educationalists (FAWE) Nigeria who initially trained staff of the organisation in a ToT and equipped the organisation with the training modules.
Held in Yola, Adamawa State Capital, the event drew principals, vice principals across 12 Junior Secondary Schools as well as officials of the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development and Adamawa State Mass Education Board.
Others who graced the workshop include School Support Officers from the Local Education Authority of the target LGAs, Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board and the management and staff of Alimat foundation.
Interestingly, the event bequeathed participants with the knowledge on "Gender and Human Rights", "Gender Responsive Schools and Management Systems", "Gender Responsive and Learner-Centered Pedagogy".
Equally, they were equipped with knowledge on "Gender Responsive Language Use, Lesson, Teaching and Learning Materials" and "Gender Responsive Classroom Set Up and Management".
Other topics extensively covered during the workshop include"Sexual and Reproductive Health and Gender Responsive Schools," and "School Related Gender Based Violence, Sexual Harassment and Trauma".
This is in line with the NGOs mission of improving the lives and future prospects of girls in Nigeria, with a strong belief that when girls are educated, protected and empowered, they have the ability to positively transform their communities, break the cycle of poverty, and create a brighter future for themselves and others.
Speaking at the event, the Program Lead of the Foundation, Yinasim Dagal, disclosed that the workshop was organised to train the participants so that they can step it down to their schools.
She noted that the event will help in promoting inclusivity in schools and the teaching and learning outcome amongst students and also reduce gender inequality.
According to her, their effort is to have secondary schools that are gender responsive and understand the specific needs of boys, girls and vulnerable students.
She hinted that identifying those needs will help in creating gender responsive schools.
In his presentation on various topics, Ibrahim Bello, tasked the participants to make effective use of the knowledge acquired at the workshop.
Ibrahim Bello, urged them to create a profile of each student that describes the student's background, learning style, challenges and strengths, and that they should be aware of gender specific needs and disadvantaged conditions that might inhibit the ability to students' succeed in school.
He told them that children learn better when teachers believe in them, saying that if a teacher has faith in students' abilities and can see their potential, it helps their students to imagine their own success and work towards achieving it.
The cross section of the participants applauded the NGO for organising the event and promised to work towards making their school centers of excellence. At the end of the third day, the participants developed an action plan, detailing specific actions and policies they intend to introduce in their school towards making their schools gender responsive and inclusive.
