A commercial tricycle operator, Bello Tukur, has been convicted and sentenced to 11 years and 6 months in prison custody for assaulting a police officer among other offences.
He was also sentenced for participating in protest staged by the Keke NAPEP operators who blocked streets in Yola, the Adamawa state capital for several hours in June this year.
NEWS PLATFORM recalled that the operators, who protested an alleged multiple charges, caused a buildup of vehicular traffic and forced other road users to divert routes.
But Bello of Saminaka in Yola South LGA, who participated in the protest and assaulted the police officer, was nabbed on the 3rd August, 2022 for several offences.
The offences of which he was arrested include; driving without driving licence, operating tricycle without particulars, obstruction on a public way across line of navigation and assaulting or criminal force to deter public servant from performing his duty.
It was learnt that since the day of protest, the convict had been at large only to be sighted and arrested on the 3rd August, 2022, by men attached to the Central Motor Traffic Division who were on patrol.
He was subsequently arraigned before Jimeta Area Court II presided by Hon. Muhammad Alamin Diya Lamurde, where he pleaded guilty to all the alleged offences.
The matter was later adjourned to the 4th August, 2022 for the purpose of corroboration and summary trial as sought by the Prosecutor, Inspector Ishaku Bello.
At the court's resumed sitting, Inspector Ishaku, informed the court that the officer who supposed to testify was on official duty.
However, he pleaded with the court to ask the defendant and now convict whether he still maintains his earlier guilt plea.
When asked about his plea as applied by the ptosecutor, the convict maintained his plea as a result of which the prosecution prayed the court to try him summarily.
It was at this juncture that the court sentenced him to 6 months in prison or pay N10, 000 option of fine under section 7 (1) of Road Traffic Rule cap 548 Laws of the Federation.
The judge also sentenced him to 6 years in prison with N200, 000 option of fine under sections 56 and 156 of the penal code law 2018, respectively.
Furthermore, Hon. Alamin Diya Lamurde, sentenced him 5 years imprisonment or alternative fine of N100, 000 and held that the sentences are to run concurrently.
