No fewer 60 journalists cut across Northeast were on Wednesday, trained on environmental sustainability reporting.
The workshop which was held in Yola, Adamawa State Capital had journalists drawn from Taraba, Gombe, Yobe, Bauchi, Adamawa and Borno. The 2- day event will be rounded up on Thursday.
Cross section of the journalists were trained at the workshop organised by a non governmental organisation, Climate Africa Media Initiative and Centre(CAMIC), and sponsored by Dangote Group of Company.
The participants were equipped with relevant knowledge required to effectively report topical environmental issues in order to protect and promote healthy and safe environment for all.
Speaking at the event, a Senior Lecturer Department of English, Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Prof. John Ngamsa, said that the need to promote healthy environment cannot be over-emphasized.
Prof. Ngamsa, said that everybody should be up and doing to understand the terms on the environmental based issues, explaining that 90 percent of the air people take is no longer pure.
The university Don stated that people need a secured environment with natural endowment for habitation, adding thus:" Whether we like or not, we have take it, live by it, and ensure we get it right".
He identified several environmental challenges including climate change, biodiversity, pollution, natural disaster among others and called on the participants to focus more attention on reporting such issues.
Prof. John Ngamsa, described the event as a nice brainstorming session and highly informative and applauded the organisers and sponsor of the workshop.
Likewise, speaking on "Journalism and Climate Change" the Executive Director, Climate Africa Media Initiative and Centre(CAMIC), Aliu Akoshile, described journalists as critical stakeholders in protecting and preserving healthy environment.
On his part, Dr. Shadrach Idi, Lecturer Taraba State University urged them to develop passion/interest in investigative environmental journalism, and further charged them to change the way they think about environment.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Manager Media Relations in the North, Jibrin Abubakar, said that the event was organised to enhance journalists' knowledge to report environment.
In his closing remarks, the Programme Manager CAMIC, Rasheed Yusuf, commended the facilitators and the participants and appealed to the participants in particular to act on what they have learnt.
