Adamawa state University (ADSU) Mubi, says it has concluded arrangements to start issuing admissions to first set of law students.
According to the university, Faculty of Medicine is next on the line to be established, saying that the committee constituted to that effect has gone far and is keenly awaiting approval from NUC to start running the faculty.
It added that the committee in agreement with Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and the University Governing Council has gone far in its assignment.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, made this known while speaking at a one day public hearing organised by Adamawa state House of Assembly Standing Committee on Education, Tertiary and Professional Institutions held in Yola on Tuesday.
The public hearing which was organised by the committee headed by Hon. Bathiya Wesley (PDP Hong), saw relevant stakeholders making their presentations on a bill for law to establish ADSU.
Prof Kaletapwa stated that the state university has since gotten approval from National Universities Commission to run Faculty of Law, and that any moment Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) calls of its strike action, the new faculty will be issuing admissions to its first set of students.
She told the gathering that the school has close to 20,000 students between 2017 to 2020 because according to her the university has established 3 new faculties on ground.
She called for more funding of the state owned university, insisting that there is no university with such faculties that is not making investment in billions because the students must have standard libraries, laboratories, classrooms and other basic amenities.
According to her, Faculty of Medicine is not something that can be set up with a peanut, but must be of standard for students to learn, adding that 5 percent being deducted from LGCs cannot be able to take care of even the 2 faculties because they are professional faculties.
She pointed out that education is a capital intensive venture, and that institution cannot provide quality education running on zero naira, saying that ADSU has outlived the 5 percent being given to it.
Professor Kaletapwa Farauta stated further that the university does not draw salary from the state government, and that it is the percentages that are given to it that they use to pay salaries unlike other higher institutions where their salaries are paid by the state government.
