Adamawa State House of Assembly on Tuesday, set up a 7 Member Adhoc Committee with a mandate to strive towards ensuring that the action plan adopted during security meeting is implemented in order curb farmer/herder conflicts.
The committee is given one week to go round and meet with emirs, chiefs, Local Government Council Chairmen, leadership of farmers, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Tapital Pula'aku among others so as to ensure that they fully implement what was adopted at the just concluded security meeting.
The committee is to be headed by Hon. Shuaibu Babas(Fufore Gurin), Chairman House Committee on Agriculture and to be assisted by the Chairman Committee on Livestock, Hon. Myandassa Bauna(Lamurde).
It has Hon. Ibrahim Musa Italiya(Mayo Belwa), Hon. Umar Nashon Gubi(Nasarawo Binyeri), Hon. Abdullahi Umar Yapak(Verre), Hon. Alhassan Hamanjoda(Ganye), Hon. Pwamwakeno Mackondo (Numan), Chairmen House Committees on Security, LG Affairs, Interparliamentary Affairs, Legislative Compliance and Judiciary as members.
Announcing the composition of the committee while presiding over the sitting, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, said the only solution to the incessant clashes is the implementation of the action plan adopted at the just concluded high profile security meeting; hence, the constitution of the committee.
The resolution of the assembly followed a motion on matter of urgent public importance brought before the house by the member representing Verre constituency, Hon. Abdullahi Umar Yapak.
Earlier, Hon. Yapak, informed the assembly that the motion became imperative considering the spate of clashes between farmers and herders during havesting period which bring about loss of lives and property.
The APC legislator stressed the need to check the influx of herders from neighbouring countries into the state until after farmers have completed harvesting their farm produce, saying that the majority of their electorate are farmers who depend solely on farming as their source of livelihood.
Hon. Yapak, said that currently their electorate are havesting their farm produce after long and hectic farming season, and that they confronted by herders migrating into the state who more often than not wreck havoc on their crops.
He urged the assembly and other stakeholders to be proactive in addressing the lingering problem between farmers and herders and prayed the assembly to impress on the stakeholders including traditional rulers, LGCs, security outfits to nip the menace in the bud.
Contributing on the motion, the Member representinbg Guyuk constituency, Hon. Adwawa Donglock, harped on the need to revisit existing laws and that the issue of cattle routes should be accorded premiunm attention so as to enable their electorate live peacefully.
On his part, Hon. Abubakar Isa(Shelleng) observed that the issue of issuing timely to the farmers to harvest their farm produce will be counter productive, saying that everyone must be made to know his or her boundary and the importance of coexisting peacefully.
Other legislators including Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno (Demsa), Hon. Simon Isa(Song) and Hon. Hamman tukur Yettisuri, commended the sponsor of the motion.
