Disastified with the judgment delivered on the 16th June, 2023, Hon. Auwal filed an appeal at the appellate court in Yola, seeking the nullification of the judgement of the lower court.

FINTIRI'S CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE TO WIKE AN AFFIRMATION OF THEIR PERSONAL BOND

By Peter Cheman Koti

Governor Ahmadu Umaru recently extended his congratulations to H.E. Nyemsom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, on his appointment as the FCT (Federal Capital Territory) minister by the government of Bola Ahmed. However, Umaru's gesture was met with heavy criticisms, with some accusing him of betrayal.

Though, I am not his aide or assigned to hold any brief on his behalf, I knew some will receive such with a pinch of salt, especially reminiscing the path Wike took in the last election against the PDP. I have seen some statements flying already. Nevertheless, it is worth considering an alternative perspective by removing political lenses and viewing Umaru's congratulatory message as an expression of friendship rather than a political maneuver.

The depth of Umaru and Wike's friendship may transcend our understanding, and it is essential to acknowledge that friendships can exist alongside opposite political affiliations. While it is natural for individuals to perceive politics in every aspect of life, it is important to recognize that politics does not necessarily equate to enmity.

Besides, His Excellency has supported our revered former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar in all ramifications, both in manpower and resources in the last elections. Infact, Atiku's son is a two term cabinet member under his administration. That should give us an idea into the kind of politics the Adamawa state governor is into.

Politics, at its core, revolves around the exercise of power, the pursuit of public interests, and the governance of a society. However, it should not overshadow the human connections and relationships that thrive outside the realm of politics. Umaru's congratulatory message to Wike can be seen as an affirmation of their personal bond, emphasizing that their friendship transcends political considerations.

It is understandable that individuals may hold differing opinions on this matter. After all, political events and decisions often generate intense emotions and divisions. However, it is worthwhile to remember that friendships can withstand political differences and that acknowledging the multifaceted nature of relationships can promote a more nuanced understanding of human interactions.

FORGERY: HOW TRIBUNAL QUASHED SEN. NYAKO's PETITION AGAINST SEN. IYA ABBAS

L-R: Sen. Aminu Iya Abbas and Sen. Abdulazeez Murtala Nyako

The National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Yola, Adamawa State on Saturday, dismissed the petition instituted against Aminu Iya Abbas, Senator representing Adamawa Central Senatorial District.

The decision of the tribunal has put to rest allegation of falsification of documents levelled against the incumbent Senator, Iya Abbas by the defeated Candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Sen. Abdulazeez Murtala Nyako.

Sen. Abdulazeez, son of the erstwhile Governor, Murtala Nyako, and his party had filed petition, alleging that Sen. Iya Abbas, who was declared winner and return elected of the exalted seat, had used forged documents in vying for the most coveted seat in the district.

Abdulazeez, and one time senator who represented the district, had joined Sen. Iya Abbas, PDP and INEC as 1st to 3rd respondents in his petition and asked the tribunal to nullify his election on ground that he had falsified his certificate of birth.

He averred that Sen. Iya Abbas is not qualified to contest the February 25th, 2023 general election having submitted a falsed statutory declaration of age to the electoral umpire.

The petitioner tied his petition on the alleged non qualification of the 1st respondent and the immediate past Speaker of the House of Assembly, and prayed the tribunal to nullify his election and withdraw certificate of return issued to him by the electoral body.

Furthermore, he urged the tribunal to declare him as the winner of the seat and be issued with the certificate of return having emerged second by the lawful votes cast during the exercise.

He alleged that the declarant, Alh. Iya Abbas was dead at the time the documents were produced on the 21st January, 2011, insisting that the father of the Senator, Aminu Iya Abbas died in 2008, precisely 3 solid years before the documents were made.

In her well considered judgment on the petition, one of the Judges of the tribunal, Maryam Ahmed Sabo, stated that there was no credible and convincing evidence that Sen. Iya Abbas submitted documents to take undue advantage against his opponent.

Justice Maryam held that whether the Senator was born in 1973 or 1975, he is still above the Constitutional requirement of 35 years to contest election held on the 25th February, 2023. " l hold that the 1st respondent is Constitutionally competent and won the election held on the 25th February, 2023 for Adamawa Central District". She declared.

She said that there was no credible and compelling evidence that Sen. Iya Abbas has criminal intent to forge his statutory declaration of age in order to circumvent the provision of the Constitution being that it was admitted by all parties (Sen. Abdulazeez inclusive) that he was above 35 years at the time of the 2023 election which no need for him to alter his age.

According to her, Sen. Abdulazeez and APC who alleged that Sen. Iya Abbas forged his documents must prove and establish that he did so with intent to defraud, misled or take undue advantage of adversary party, saying that their evidence is short to prove the criminal intent of Sen. Iya Abbas.

She stated that it is also not the fact that the alleged statutory declaration of age was signed by the Senator himself, adding that section 65 (a) of the 1999 Constitution as amended provides that a person shall be qualified to contest for senate if he is a citizen of Nigeria and has attained the age of 35 years.

She said that in his final written address, the petitioner made it categorically clear that he has no grudges with the age of Sen. Iya Abbas; instead, it is an act presenting a forged documents to INEC, which means the 49 years of Sen. Iya Abbas is not at all in dispute.

NEWS PLATFORM gathered that even the petitioners in their pleadings, statements on oath and under cross examination testified and affirmed that Sen. Iya Abbas is above the Constitutional requirement age stipulated in aforementioned section.

Justice Maryam Ahmed Sabo dismissed the petition in its entirety and in the interest of justice, awarded cost of N750, 000 only in favour of the 3 respondents against the petitioners.

PROF. ABDALLAH LAUDS SHEIKH BALA LAU, ULAMAS FOR BROKERING TRUCE IN NIGER REPUBLIC

A UK based Critical Infrastructure Protection Consultant has lauded the noble efforts of a Nigerian Islamic cleric, Sheikh Bala Lau and some Ulamas, over their intervention to broker peace between the Nigerien Military juntas, ECOWAS and the Negerien populace.

Abdalla said, the Bala Lau-led Islamic mediation team has succeeded in quenching the embars of war that would have engulfed the country and had also made the difference in halting unnecessary shedding of blood in the country through mediation and constructive engagement.

Abdalla made this known in a press statement made available to Rendezvous news, over the weekend.

Yakub Abdalla pointed out that the actions of the clerics was consistent with Islamic injunctions and typically reflects the humanity and humane culture of the African people.

Yakub said, “Peace in Islam is an eternal constitution. The principle of Islam is peace and coexistence, not conflict, violence and war.

“Islamic peace-making therefore is a teaching and tradition that transcend divisions. ‘It may be that God will grant love [and friendship] between you and those whom ye [now] hold as enemies. For God is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful’ (Quran 60:7).

“I am writing today because I realize that after the Prophet of Islam (SAW) every other leadership in nations has been by elections. Even in monarchy like Saudi Arabia and other Islamic nations there is always limited democracy, a conferment of leadership by the kingmakers that represent various interest groups in the society. Even here in the UK, we have limited elections because we do not elect our King or Queen but are conferred through kingmakers that represent interest groups.

“The challenge we have in Niger Republic and every other forceful government is the conferment through the barrel of the gun.

“The threat to life of a person or group of persons through lethal means, except as a means of defence, is not only cowardly but callous in all ramifications.”

Pointing out the fault line that comes along with a barrel induced government, he said, “Niger and other countries in their shoes have done the wrong thing, denying their own people the right to be represented.

The military are currently dishing out menu of what they believe Nigeriens want, whether it right or wrong. In this coup No.8 in Niger Republic, they would have known that their best days were the civilian days.

There have been seventy-eight coups in West Africa since 1952 with severe lack of continuity and unbearable economic consequences.

“Every time there is a coup in West Africa, some colonial masters or the common culprit, the CIA is accused as responsible. The cause of action usually is to run to another colonial master who will continue the pulverization of our lands and resources. West Africa has no independent political philosophy and most times it is impossible to measure success of governments in the region.

“All our countries are copycats, plagiarising constitutions of western nations while trying to live Middle Eastern or far eastern lifestyle. We are not English, French, Arabic, Chinese, or Russian. We have very serious identity crises.

“Unlike other nations we are Africans who have our mother tongues, community based values, and respect for our elders. We have various religions, but in these identity crises most of our leaders adhere to a main and minor religion. Many would go to churches or mosques and also go to some diabolical covens, clairvoyants, or psychic readers. For Africans it is always God plus; the very reason why IZALA was formed in 1978.

“We are unique in our own ways in West Africa. We are not the only set of people that are unique; Britain is the same. When they could not reconcile who they were with federalism they went for Parliamentary system. They retained their king and commoners’ representative. They accepted a class system based on their own uniqueness. Africa must evolve its own system of government that will include all and respect all, irrespective of colour or creed.

The recent flurry of activities therefore, and the dash to Niger Republic by Sheikh Bala Lau the leader of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah also called JIBWIS and the ULAMAS from Nigeria is in the pursuit of what Allah SWT has commanded, PEACE, is not only extraordinary but highly commendable.

“Their role was to do whatever is their power to bring about peaceful negotiation and discussions to resolve the issues that brought about coup d’état in Niger.”

Outlining what he considers as the success of the Bala Lau peace mission, he said, “Their aim was to enable reasonable dialogue that will diffuse rather than exacerbate Nigerien issues. Speaking to people that were involved in the process, I believe that Sheikh Bala Lau and the ULAMAS have achieved three things:

“1.They stopped the shedding of blood, which is inevitable in wars.2.They have proven that Peace cannot be achieved through violence; it can only be attained through understanding.3.They have earned the respect of Nigeriens, Nigerians, and ECOWAS.”

He concluded that, “What shall we then say of Sheikh Bala Lau and the ULAMAS? They have shown us that peace demands greater heroism than war. It demands greater fidelity to the truth and a much more perfect purity of conscience.

“Niger Republic is mainly Muslims and Sheikh Bala Lau has shown us that when conflicts are approached in the Islamic way, it has the unlimited capacity to bring peace.

“However, the work for Sheikh Bala Lau has just been cut out for him. Peace demands the most heroic labour and the most difficult sacrifice. We plead with him and the ULAMAS to continue on this path of difficult sacrifice until we see real peace in Niger Republic; a peace that will be without loss of life and carrying its people along in all processes of governance. May Allah SWT make it easy for you all.”
