Just In: ADHA Moves to Extend Tenure of LGC Chairmen to 3 Yrs



Adamawa State House of Assembly has taken steps to repeal the Local Government Administration, System and Establiment Law 2,000 to extend the tenure of LGC Chairmen from 2 years to 3 years. News Platform 


This action followed a letter seeking to repeal the law in order to extend the tenure of the LGC Chairmen to 3 years forwarded to the assembly by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.


The letter and one other were read at the Friday resumed plenary session by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley while the Majority Leader of the assembly,  Hon. Kate Raymond Mamumo, read the bills for the 1st and 2nd times respectively.


Already, the assembly has since committed the proposed bill to the assembly Committee on LG and Chieftaincy Affairs for scrutiny following separate motions by the Majority Leader of the assembly and Member representing Demsa constituency, Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno.


Earlier, Hon. Kate Mamuno and only female Lawmaker, moved for the suspension of House Standing Order 14 2 to enable them sit on Friday which is not the day of their plenaries and considering the fact that the assembly has been on the recess.


She highlighted the importance of the bills more especially that of the LGCs for the overall development of the LGAs, and called on her colleagues to consider its significance and ensure its passage.


Reacting on the development, the Vice Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Geoffrey Bulus, who represents Leko-Koma constituency, said that the assembly has started legislating on the bill and commended the effort.


Also speaking on the merit of the bill, the Member of the Committee and Chairman House Committee of Public Service, Public Petitions and Electoral Matters, Hon. Bulus Kantomon applauded the effort to extend the tenure of the Chairmen.


Hon. Kantomon who represents Shelleng Constituency, described the letter and steps by the assembly as a welcome development, saying that the bill is in the interest of the general public.
