The Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola, Adamawa State has remanded 4 Borno State indigenes for allegedly stealing 66 pieces of mobile phones and other items valued N4.5 million.
The Defendants who were remanded in prison custody include; Mohammed Ali, Muhammed Bashir, Usman Ibrahim and Bunu Bulami. All of them hail from Maiduguri in Borno State.
However, the Court has fixed Monday the 20th June, 2022 for ruling on the bail application filed by their Counsel, A. U. Ibrahim of Goshi Chamber.
NEWS PLATFORM was informed that the Defendants allegedly broke into the shop of one Sadiq Lawan, at Shopping Complex on the 19th May, 2022, and carted away 66 pieces of handsets, 25 bluetooths, 10 power banks and N650, 000, cash.
In the course of investigation, the Defendants were found in possession of some of the stolen items in Maiduguri, Borno State. They were said to have sold some of the items in Maiduguri.
Ali and 3 others were arraigned before the Court on Friday, for the alleged offences of broken open receptable containing property, theft and dishonestly receiving stolen property and pleaded not guilty when the case was mentioned.
According to the Prosecutor, Seargent Abubakar Ahmed, the offences contravened sections 345, 276 and 307 of the Penal Code law of Adamawa State.
After the plea of the Defendants, their Counsel, Ibrahim prayed the Court to admit them to bail and assured the Court that hus Clients will not jump bail.
On his part, the Prosecutor objected to application on grounds that the matter is still under investigation coupled with the fact that the Defendants reside in Maiduguri, Borno State and not in Adamawa.
Sgt Ahmed, urged the Court to consider the number of items and the amount involved, and that if the Court will grant them bail, it should invoke section 166 (2) of Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
It was at this juncture that the Court presided by Chief Magistrate Mohammed Abubakar, adjourned the matter to the 20th June, 2022, for ruling on the application.
He odered the remand of the Defendants at the Correctional Centre.
