Adamawa NUJ Marks Int'l Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists
The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Adamawa State Council, has joined the global community to commemorate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists being observed annually on November 2.
This is contained in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Comr Abdullahi Ibrahim, and Secretary, Comr Kissinger Bukar, of the council.
The union expressed deep concern over the increasing threats, harassment, and violence faced by journalists in the course of their professional duties, both globally and within Nigeria.
The leadership noted that the day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by journalists who risk their lives in pursuit of truth, accountability, and justice. It emphasized that impunity for crimes against media practitioners remains a major challenge to press freedom and democracy.
“We use this occasion to call on government authorities, security agencies, and all stakeholders to ensure the protection of journalists and guarantee justice for those attacked in the line of duty,” the statement read.
“Ending impunity is not only about protecting journalists but also about safeguarding the public’s right to information and defending the pillars of democracy.”
The union reaffirmed its commitment to continue advocating for the safety, welfare, and professional development of journalists, while urging media practitioners to uphold the highest standards of ethics, accuracy, and responsibility in their work.
It also called on media owners and employers to provide necessary safety training and support to journalists covering sensitive assignments, particularly in conflict-prone areas.
As the world marks this important day, the NUJ Adamawa Council stands in solidarity with journalists everywhere who have suffered threats or attacks, reiterating that “justice for journalists is justice for all.”
