MAN FACES TRIAL FOR KILLING NEIGHBOUR OVER N500 RUBBER PLATE

A Butcher in Adamawa State, Yunusa Inuwa, was on Tuesday, arraigned for allegedly stabbing his neighbour to death for breaking rubber plate valued N500.

The accused was arraigned before the State High Court presided by Hon. Justice Ishaku Y. Haliru, for killing his neighbour, Rabiu Muhammed, during a quarrel over the plate.

Yunusa, of Tafida Street in Yola North LGA, stabbed the deceased around his left neck with a sharp knife for breaking the plate belonging to Dahiratu, his younger brother's wife and refusing to pay.

NEWS PLATFORM gathered that the ugly incident occured on the 15th August, 2020 at 1:00pm, shortly after the defendant had returned from abattoir where he met his brother's wife shouting over the broken plate.

While enquiring to know who broke the plate, Yunusa, was informed by one, Umaraji, that it was Rabiu, who broke the plate, and there and then asked him to accompany him to the deceased.

The duo met Rabiu servicing his tricycle and asked him the reason why he broke the plate. The deceased replied to him that he had found it in the dusbin and did not know its owner.

After telling his victim that the plate belongs to his younger brother's wife, the defendant however demanded that his victim should pay or incur his wrath.

The deceased was said to have replied to him that he will not pay a dime, and does not see a person who will force him to do so.

It was at this juncture that misunderstanding ensued which degenerated to a quarrel where both of them exchanged blows, but got separated by people.

During the quarrel, the butcher attempted pulling out his knife when the deceased engaged him with a screwdriver but held his peace because many people were around and eventually returned back home.

While going out to his business place, the defendant heard his victim shouting on the top of his voice that nobody is going to force him to pay N500 for the rubber plate he broke.

Provoked by his utterances, the defendant confronted the deceased where he engaged him in a fresh quarrel.

The defendant was said to have used his sharp knife and stabbed his victim by the neck after the deceased attempted stabbing him with his screwdriver.

Having realising that his victim had collapsed, the defendant fled the scene of the crime and got arrested by the police and arraigned for culpable homicide contrary to section 191(a) and punishable under section 192(a) of the penal code law.

When the statement and particulars of the offence was read sequel to an application by the prosecuting counsel, I. S . Barde (Senior State Counsel 1), defendant pleaded not guilty.

Consequently, the prosecuting counsel applied for a date to assemble witnesses to prove his case.

On his part, Counsel to the defendant, Mohammed Abubakar, of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, did not object to the application.

The matter has been adjourned to the 15th Nov. 2022 for hearing.
