Nutrition Fund/EBF: CS-SUNN Takes Advocacy to Adamawa Planning Commission

A Civil Society – Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) on Wednesday, paid an advocacy visit on the Executive Chairman Adamawa State Commission on the need for the state to adopt child nutrition funds as well as extend paid maternity leave from 3 to 6 months for mothers.

The effort of CS-SUNN, which is being funded by UNICEF, is to ensure the extension of paid maternity leave to afford mothers time and resources needed for healthy development of children as well as nutrition funds to tackle severe malnutrition among children.

The delegation was warmly received by the Executive Chairman Adamawa Planning Commission, Dr. Mary Paninga and the Permanent Secretary of the commission, Tanimu Buba, in her office at the State Secretariat Complex in Yola, Adamawa State.

Briefing the Chairman on the purpose of the visit, the State Coordinator of CS-SUNN, Ngozika Ibhadode, said that the mandate and the vision of their alliance is to see a country where every citizen has food and is nutrition secured.

Ngozika, explained that the CS-SUNN is  concerned about the future generation and how actions and inactions of the stakeholders and other citizens will impact on the nutrition status of children.

"We have looked at the nutrition assessment as provided by the National Demographic Health Survey and other instruments of measuring nutrition in the country and found out that in the area of exclusive breastfeeding, Nigeria is not doing well.

"Thankfully, the country had approved 6 months maternity leave for all women to support them to bond with their children, breastfeed exclusively and to recover from issues around child birth".

"The enforcement across the country is our major concern. We have been going round states on advocacy to ensure that governments make commitment. We are in Adamawa State to get commitment on what can be done to take us a step further from where we are to where we supposed to be. Ngozika stated.

She further explained that their mission is to ensure Six (6) months paid maternity leave is adopted by the Adamawa State Government and practice in the state, and sought for the support of the commission in the interest of the future generation.

She hammered that they want to see how Adamawa State can put it into practice, enforce it across all sectors and how it can provide safe spaces for breastfeeding at work places.

According to her, breast milk contains all the nutrients that every child needs to develop and to grow, saying that they have a bench mark of 50 percent exclusive breastfeeding rate to achieve by 2025.

The Coordinator disclosed that currently Nigeria is at 29 percent in the area of breastfeeding, and that the country has been on that percentage since 2018, lamenting that the percentage portrays the country in bad light.

Also speaking, the Programme Officer CS-SUNN, Ambrose Evhoesor, commended the state government for its commitment, saying that they had observed there was drastic increase in nutrition in 2024 budget compared to the past years.

Ambrose, said that it means the state government is also concerned and ready to come in and see how the issue can be addressed, and applauded Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and his administration for the commitment towards achieving it.

He said that Adamawa requires emergency attention and one of the ways they can address indices before them is to ensure that 6 months paid maternity leave is passed in the state.

He said that if the is state is able to pass the 6 months paid maternity leave and is able to meet expectations, founders will see areas where they can come in and support the state.

The Programme Officer added that they came to seek for her support and for Adamawa State to key in because according to him couple of states have keyed into it, urging her to help in ensuring that women get 6 months paid maternity leave.

Responding, the Executive Chairman Adamawa Planning Commission, Dr. Mary Paninga, appreciated the delegation for the visit and assured them of the commission's support.

Dr. Paninga, informed them that Adamawa State has policy on food and nutrition, saying that they next thing they loved to do is the implementation of the policy.

According to her, it is not only about implementation but to get the policy legally stamped by the State House of Assembly, saying that when it becomes a legal document it will be better as will make provision for 6 months paid maternity leave, provide safe spaces for breastfeeding and other relevant issues.

She pointed out that to get the document passed by the House of Assembly is key and needs sensitisation and consultation, advocacy to communities.

Baring his mind, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission who is also the Chairman Food and Nutrition, Tanimu Buba, pledged to cooperate with CS-SUNN and other relevant organisations to achieve the set objectives.

Tanimu, told the delegation that they know where they can key in in order to get good result and applauded the advocacy visit.

ICPC Partners with Northern Christian Group to Fight Corruption at LGs

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is set to collaborate with the Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) to promote transparency and accountability in local government financial administration and prevent corruption and mismanagement of funds.

This development was announced on Thursday when the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, represented by the Secretary to the Commission, Mr. Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu, DSSRS, received the leadership of the NCYP on a courtesy visit at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Dr. Aliyu reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to partnering with the group to ensure that Nigerians at the grassroots level benefit from the federal government's local government financial autonomy policy.

The ICPC used the opportunity to emphasize that this goal could only be achieved through viable collaborations with relevant stakeholders to prevent corruption and mismanagement of public funds.

According to him, "We are ready to partner with you in ensuring that local government financial autonomy benefits the grassroots and improves the quality of life in our communities,".

He urged the NCYP and other Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) to support the Commission’s fight against corruption by sensitizing the public and holding elected officials accountable.

Dr. Aliyu stressed the need for the group to equip themselves with adequate information on local government fund disbursements and expenditures, as this would enable them to educate the public, monitor spending, expose corrupt practices, and ensure that public officeholders are held accountable.

Continuing, he said, “You must educate the people in your communities on how disbursed funds by local government councils are being spent.

However, the process must start with you, and the impact will spread,".

In his remarks, the NCYP Chairman, Mr. Isaac Abrak, who commended the ICPC for its anti-corruption efforts under the leadership of Dr. Aliyu expressed the group's desire to partner with the Commission to ensure that local government funds are utilized for the development of the people.

"We are here to celebrate the Commission for conducting its operations in line with the rule of law and due process based on its constitutional mandates," Mr. Abrak stated.

He further noted that the NCYP advocated for grassroots development and financial autonomy for local government areas. He described the recent financial autonomy -granted by the Federal Government and affirmed by the Supreme Court- as one of the most people-oriented policies of the present administration.

"We have confidence in the present government for promising to disburse funds directly into local government accounts. This will address many challenges faced by LGAs and the people at the grassroots. We are eager to know how we can assist the Commission in ensuring the right things are done at the local levels," he added.

Mr. Abrak concluded by commending the ICPC’s recent engagement with local government executives in Gombe State and encouraged the Commission to continue its commendable work.

Businessman Bags 1 Year Jail Term over Visa Fraud in Lagos

A Lagos Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja has convicted and sentenced Dennis Adeniran Adetoye to one year imprisonment for visa fraud.

This followed his arraignment by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The defendant was arrested at the British Deputy High Commission’s office in Lagos after presenting forged documents, including an invitation letter from Clarivate Analytics dated April 20, 2018, an introduction letter from the same company dated May 16, 2018, and a falsified Diamond Bank Plc statement of account.

Investigations by the Commission revealed that Adetoye had falsely claimed to be the regional business lead for Clarivate Analytics and that the company would sponsor his trip to London, UK, in an attempt to fast-track the procurement of a UK visa.

He was subsequently arraigned before Justice R.A. Oshodi at Court 48, Roseline Omotosho Court House, Ikeja, on a two-count charge of receipt of property obtained using an act constituting a felony, knowing the same to have been so obtained.

The charges were filed under Section 13 and were punishable under Section 68 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

Upon his arraignment on March 4, 2025, Adetoye pleaded guilty to all counts. He was immediately remanded in Kirikiri Maximum Prison, pending sentencing.

During the sentencing proceedings on March 5, 2025, the defence counsel, J.O. Momoh, pleaded for leniency, arguing that the defendant was a first-time offender who had turned a new leaf and had since ventured into a decent textile business.

Justice Oshodi, in his judgment, convicted Adetoye and sentenced him to one year imprisonment on each count in lieu of a fine of one million Naira for all counts.

The court also ordered him to undertake an affidavit of good conduct, pledging never to engage in any criminal or corrupt activities again.

Furthermore, his biometric details will be registered in the offender’s database maintained by the Lagos State Judiciary.

The conviction, in this case prosecuted by three ICPC counsels, Yvonne William Mbata, Roseline Okoro, and Oluwayemisi Pereira, reinforces the Commission’s commitment to tackling corruption and fraudulent activities in the country, especially in matters relating to the falsification of documents for visa applications.

Clarification Regarding Allegations by Sen Cyril Fasuyi Against Dr. Fayemi

We have become aware of a statement made by Senator Cyril Fasuyi during today’s Senate plenary, in which he alleged that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan had previously accused Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, of sexual harassment.

We categorically state that this claim is entirely false. At no time has Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan—or anyone else, for that matter—ever accused Dr. Fayemi of such misconduct. It appears that the Distinguished Senator from Ekiti inadvertently misrepresented the facts, as no such allegation has ever been made against Dr. Fayemi.

Consequently, there is no basis for Senator Fasuyi’s further assertion that Dr. Fayemi would be submitting a petition to the Senate in this regard. We would like to believe that, in his enthusiasm to defend the Senate President, Senator Fasuyi inadvertently conflated events, leading to a misrepresentation of facts.

For the record, the only professional engagement Dr. Fayemi ever had with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was during his tenure as the Honourable Minister of Mines and Steel Development, when he oversaw matters related to the Ajaokuta Steel Company. While they may have held differing views on the future of the company at the time, their interactions remained strictly within the realm of policy discussions. At no point did Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan make any allegations of misconduct against Dr. Fayemi.

We urge Senator Fasuyi to exercise greater diligence in verifying facts before making public statements, especially on sensitive matters that could damage reputations.

Dr. Fayemi remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity in public service, and we reject any attempt to tarnish his name with baseless allegations

Signed

Mallam Ahmad Sajoh

Head, the Fayemi Media Office, Abuja
