Godwin Zamfara: Iya Abbas Queries Release of Suspects as Senate Demands Proper Investigation
The Senator representing Adamawa Central Senatorial District, Aminu Iya Abbas has raised concern over the release of 6 out of 9 suspects apprehended in connection to the gruesome murder of PDP Chieftain, Godwin Thomas Zamfara. News Platform
Senator Iya Abbas expressed concern over the release while raising matter of personal explanation before the senate on the need to avert communal clash over non diligent investigation of the killing of Godwin Zamfara in Hong LGA.
He said, "I want to bring to the notice of the senate that a politician called Thomas Godwin Zamfara was murdered on the 15th April, 2025, in my constituency".
The Senator disclosed that the police in Adamawa State while investigated the matter apprehended 9 suspects in connection to the murder.
He informed the senate that while investigation was still going on, a team of police came from IRT Abuja and took over the case, saying that they were later told that the suspects will be released.
He said, "I wrote to the Inspector General of Police that IRT has no power to investigate the murder case; instead, it should be transferred to homicide department to enable it carry out proper investigation.
"It took some stakeholders including my humble self from the LGA who pleaded with the community not to retaliate, but to our dismay, 6 out of 9 suspects were released after I wrote letter to the IGP.
He told the senate that 2 out of 6 suspects released issued a video that they were forced to admit committing the crime, saying that the state police command had to issue a statement that nobody was forced to admit committing the crime.
According to him, there is brewing conflict between the IRT and Adamawa State Police Command, saying that he brought up the matter so that the senate will take action.
He further stated that there might be retaliation or clash in the community failure of the senate to take action.
Senator Aminu Iya Abbas prayed the senate to instruct the IGP to transfer the case to homicide department for proper investigation so that those found wanting will be properly prosecuted.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio expressed sympathy and directed the Chairman Senate Committee on Police Affairs to liaise with relevant authorities to ensure investigation is carried out and justice is done.
