Just In: Adamawa Assembly Passes Bill to Provide Electricity for Citizens
The Adamawa State House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to provide electricity for the citizens in Adamawa state. News Platform
The bill was designed to provide a comprehensive legal and institutional framework for electricity services in Adamawa State was passed at the resumed sitting on Tuesday.
After the passage, the Speaker of the assembly, Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley, who presided over the sitting, directed the Clerk to prepare a clean copy for Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri
The bill seeks to repeal the Gongola Basin Energy Development Company Law of 2009 and establish a modern framework for electricity generation, transmission, distribution, supply, trading, and the protection of consumer rights within the state".
The bill was read for the third time and passed following a motion by the Majority Leader and Member representing Demsa Constituency, Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno.
Earlier, according to the report presented by the House Committee on Works headed by Hon. Japhet Hammajabu (Leko-Koma) said that repealing and re-enacting the bill is aimed at establishing electricity market for Adamawa State.
The report stated that a state can harness its specific natural resources including solar, hydro or natural gas to generate power, reduce reliance on external fuel imports and associated price volatility.
"It will empower state and private investors to generate electricity within the state boundaries and will lead to an overall increase in available power addressing historical supply deficiencies.
"The closer the power generation, the better for the consumers as it will reduce the problem encountered in electricity transmission destruction of towers and transmissions lines by either windstorm or robbers.
"The committee observed that the state can design its market rules and incentive structure for renewable energy adoption that align with their local context and consumer demands", he asded
It advocated the establishment of state electricity commission and consumer grievance redressal forums will ensure that providers are accountable and that consumer complaints are handled through accessible and effective local channels.
It said that the overall state level management will allow for a more efficient, responsive and tailored electricity market that will have direct benefit to residents and foster socio-economic development.
