CATHOLIC CHUCH DONATES 430 HEALTH CENTERS, PLEDGES MORE SUPPORT TO CONTAIN COVID -19

Dr. Stephen Dami Mamza, Catholic Bishop Yola Diocese Adamawa state

Moved by the need to support the effort of the Nigerian Government in containing the dreaded covid -19 pandemic, Yola Catholic Bishop, Dr. Stephen Dami Mamza has disclosed that the church has donated over 430 hospitals and clinics to Nigerian Government to fight covid-19 pandemic.

According to Bishop Dami, it is higher good for Catholic Church to close down its facilities for its personal use, and donate it to the government so as to convert it to isolation centers to contain Coronavius across the country.

It could be recalled that Church in the state had made available its Pastoral center to Adamawa state Government to use as isolation center in the event the disease is reported in the state.

Bishop Dami who was speaking exclusively to NEWS PLATFORM in his office Yesterday, said that containing the pandemic requires concerted efforts, hence the need for the Church to donate its clinics and hospitals across the nation to aid the government wage war against the deadly disease.

Dr. Dami who is also the Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Adamawa state Chapter, said if there is anything he can do as leader of the Church to support government's effort in ending the disease, he is ever ready to so do in order to save lives.

Equally, he specifically made a passionate appeal to the members of the state House of Assembly to make sacrifices on their behalf, and that of the state, explaining that the battle requires a collective action from government, International Organisations, Faith based Organisations and well to do individuals.

On the manner the Nigerian government is confronting the pandemic, Dr. Dami lamented that Nigeria as a whole has delayed in responding promptly in terms of preparation against the disease, saying everybody knew that the disease was on its way coming, but failed to take adequate measures on those flying into the country from the countries affected by the disease.

He noted that the disease is currently spreading from state to state in Nigeria, and that the measures being taken by governments are not enough because they do not know the magnitude of the pandemic in the country at end of the day.

If people can adequately support the fight, according to him, it will lessen the kind of stress that the disease will pose on the citizens, and advised Adamawa state government to take serious measures in securing borders with neighbouring states and the Cameroon republic in particular.

Further more, he urged the state government to intensify dissemination of information to citizens on the preventive measures to enable them get used to it on how to protect themselves most especially hand washing, social distancing and avoiding crowded areas.

Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza stated that if the government will do its part and citizens do their own part, it will go along way in controlling the disease, contending that this is not a time for people to contemplate on what to get from the government; rather, it is time for them to think on what to give in order to fight the disease.
