Following an alleged assault on the Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Adamawa state council, Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan by officers of the Nigeria Police, the Union has given the state command 3 days to apologise or boycott its activities.
The Union further called on the Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Madaki to take decisive action against O/C SARS and the Jimeta Divisional Police Officer for coordinating what it described as uncivilised attack on the Secretariat.
The affected officers were reported to have stormed the press center and molested the Chairman of the Union, Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan during which they arrested no fewer than 12 associated members of the Union.
It was reported that the officers and their men invaded the center with dangerous weapons in 3 hilux vans on 2nd April, 2020, and harassed, intimidated, assaulted the Chairman and the associated members of the Union.
A statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Union, Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan and Comrade Fidelis Jockthan respectively and made available to NEWS PLATFORM this evening, issued 3 days ultimatum to the command to apologise or incur the wrath of the Union.
According to them, the two officers have become a threat to Journalists and their activities in the state, saying no amount of intimidation or harassment by security operatives will make them abandon the Press Centre which serves as the Secretariat and situation room for COVID – 19 for all practicing Journalists in Adamawa State.
NUJ as a professional industrial Union, according to the leadership is mindful and obedient to the Lockdown rules and regulations of both the Federal and State governments and would continue to abide by it.
It added that the Union has given the Adamawa State Police Command 3 days ultimatum to render an unreserved apology for the action of its officers or face total black out.
