NUJ SUSPENDS 3 DAY ULTIMATUM ON ADAMAWA POLICE AS FINTIRI STEPS IN


Three Day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Adamawa state council to the Commissioner of Police, Audu Madaki, demanding an reserved apology from the command for an alleged assault on the Chairman of the union Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan has been suspended.

The suspension of the ultimatum followed an intervention by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of the state, who brokered truce between the leadership of the Union and Police Command.

Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan was reported to had been molested by O/C SARS and Jimeta Divisional Police Officer (DPO) who stormed press centre on Thursday last week in their efforts to enforce lockdown order imposed by Fintiri to curb the spread of COVID-19.

During the operation, the officers of the command were said to have harassed, intimidated and molested the Chairman of the union, as well as arrested no fewer than 12 associate members of the union.

It was in the light of the foregoing that the leadership of union called for an emergency exco meeting on Friday last week, where it resolved and directed the police command to apologise to the union or boycott its activities planned to commence during the week.

Worried by the steps taken by the union towards giving all the activities of the command total blackout, Governor impressed on the leadership of the union to shelve the idea of boycotting the activities of the police which he actually succeeded.

In a statement jointly signed by the the Chairman and Secretary of the Union, Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan and Comrade Fidelis Jockthan respectively, and made available to NEWS PLATFORM Monday, the leadership said that they suspended the ultimatum as a result of Fintiri's intervention.

According to them, the union suspended its 3 day ultimatum as a mark of respect to Governor's intervention and called on its members to continue to carry out their constitutional responsibility particularly at this critical time that world is confronted by COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision, according to them, was taken by the state council in due consultation with the National Secretariat of NUJ, saying that the union thought it wise to honour the intervention by the number one citizen for progress and unity.
