NUJ/POLICE CRISIS: RATTAWU THUMBS UP FINTIRI, WARNS AGAINST FURTHER INTRUSION
Moved by the recent invasion of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), Adamawa State Council's Secretariat by the officers of the State Police Command, the Leadership of Radio, Television, Theater and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) has vehemently condemned the invasion and unwarranted assault meted on the chairman of the union by the police.
The Leadership of RATTAWU which comprises of Adamawa Television Corperation (ATV) and Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), threatened to shut down their media organisations should what they described as uncivilised and barbaric act is repeated on the noble union.
However, the exco gave kudos to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his timely intervention, insisting that it was his intervention that averted a full blown war between Adamawa Journalists and the Police Command.
The leaders of the chapels who spoke through Ibrahim Audu and Rikwinya Joshua during a solidarity visit on the State Executive Council of the of NUJ at the press centre Wednesday, said that they were at the secretariat to express their concern over the development.
According to them, NUJ is an institution and it should be accorded due respect and protection, saying RATTAWU was planning on how to mobilise its members to stage a major protest at the headquarters of the police command if not because of Governor Fintiri's intervention.
Henceforth, according to them, RATTAWU will not in any way tolerate such affront on the media, explaining that the role of the media cannot be underestimated most especially at this critical time that society confronted by COVID-19 pandemic.
Responding, the Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan who was flanked by other Exco, thanked the delegation for their solidarity visit.
