ACADEMIC STAFF DESERT FED POLY MUBI AS STRIKE ACTION BEGINS ON MONDAY

Academic activities at the Federal Polythecnic, Mubi in Adamawa State have totally been shutdown on Monday as the indefinite strike action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Polythecnics (ASUP) has commenced in earnest.

The Academic Staff Union of the Institution has also described as null and void, the Academic Board meeting convened by Management of the Polytechnic Mubi, on Monday.

Furthermore, according to ASUP there is no Academic Board on the ground at the moment, and that the union will not recognise any decision taken by the so-called board, because it has representatives of Academic Staff as provided for in the new Polythecnic Act.

NEWS PLATFORM gathered that all the Academic Staff of the Institution have complied with the Union's directives regarding the industrial action and completely deserted the school, paralysing more especially academic activities in the Institution.

Impeccable sources told NEWS PLATFORM that the situation in the school deteriorated as a result of a collapse of dialogue between the Union and the Management of the Institution on Friday last week.

The Academic Staff have commenced the strike action on Monday following the failure or inability of the management of the institution to meet the demands of the affected Academic Staff.

It is against this backdrop that the ASUP is advising parents not to risk the lives of their children by sending them back to the institution due to what it describes as heightened tension on the campus.

For the safety of students on campus, the Union has further asked the parents not to allow their children back to the school due to the ongoing strike action.

It could be recalled that the Union in a press release made available to newsmen has been kicking against non-implementtation of arrears, victimisation of Union's Exco and members through unlawful termination of appointments, tactical reduction of check off dues by the Bursar.

Others include denial of promotions, non inclusion of union representatives in all Polythecnic committees and above all, the non inclusion of the union's members in Academic Board which contravened Polythecnic Act 2019.

"The Union has learnt of the convocation of the Academic Board meeting for the purpose of the consideration of the re-opening of the school and that of the revised Academic calendar" said a source.

A source said that the action of the management is not only regrettable but an insult to the entire Academic Staff of this institution, saying that the union is not against the convocation of the Academic Board, but frowns at the continuation of the blatant abuse of the Polytechnic Act borrowing a leaf from the unfortunate tenure of Dr.Sadiq A.Yahya.

It added the position of the Academic representation on the Board is not negotiable, and that the decision of the Board without the input of our representative is null and void, more so, now that the union has declared a trade dispute"

Effort to get in touch with the Management of the Institution proved abortive as calls put to that effect were neither answered nor returned.
