EXTEND PAYMENT OF NEW MINIMUM WAGE TO LG WORKERS..ADAMAWA NLC URGES FINTIRI

As Adamawa State Workers join the rest of the world in celebrating 2020 World Day for Decent Work, the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC), state chapter on Wednesday urged on the state government to extend the payment of new national minimum wage to workers at the Local Government Councils without delay.

According to NLC, equating the status of those working at the third tier of government with their counterparts at the state and federal levels will boost their morale and make them become more effective and efficient as well as improve their living standard.

Aside the new minimum wage, the NLC has made a passionate appeal on the government to financially implement promotions of workers as well as sustain yearly increment so as to serve as another palliative and impetus to the Decent Work for the working people in the state.

It further called on the government to pay the areas of Leave Transport Grant (LTG) and that of the current year to both the workers of State and Local Government so as to cushion the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Chairman of the NLC in the state, Comrade Emmanuel Fashe, made the appeal during a press conference marking the 13th Anniversary of the World Day for Decent Work with a team," a New Social Contract for Recovery and Resilience " at the state secretariat of the NLC today.

Comrade Fashe specifically called on the government to look into the plight of the workers at the LGs including primary school teachers, primary healthcare workers, staff of Adamawa State German Medical Center(AGMC) who do not enjoy the new minimum wage, as well as provide personal protective equipment for the staff of Water Board and Fire Service Department.

He told newsmen that the prizes of foodstuffs have drammatically skyrocketed in the state and can have a devastating effect on those that are not benefiting from the new minimum wage.

Going by this year's celebration, he noted that the workers at the LGs have every reason to celebrate the day because they were commemorating the day in the past without salaries, lamenting that the salaries were being paid epileptically to the affected workers.

According to Fashe, workers at the LGs are sure of getting salaries as at when due only that they do not benefit from the minimum wage, saying that the affected workers supposed to be getting minimum like those at the state level.

While appreciating the government for its good gestures, he also called on the government to strive and equip health centers with modern facilities so as to match the intended recruitment of manpower.

On the relationship between workers and the government, the Chairman explained that the relationship is cordial, and it calls for celebration, saying that that does not mean that all is okay, as they have some issues that they want government to look into it.

Likewise, on the World Day for Decent Work, the Chairman observed that the day entails that the worker gets the environment conducive for the work and with good pay, pointing out that if the worker does not get social protection and security of work, the work cannot be said to be decent and earning.

Decent Work according to him, involves opportunity for work that is productive and that can deliver a fair income, security in work place and social protection for families, greater prospects for persoal development and social integrity, freedom for people to express their concerns, organise and participate in decision making that affect their lives at their work place.

Also speaking on the Covid -19 pandemic, Comrade Emmanuel Fashe posited that the data from International Trade Union Congress(ITUC) indicated that about 850, 000, people across the globe have lost their lives to the pandemic and that about 25 million infected with 4million jobs lost to the pandemic.
