Renewed killings of farmers by suspected herdsmen in Numan Federation in Adamawa State has scuttled a peace deal initiated by the New Hama Bachama, Homun Daniel Shaga Ismaila and his counterpart, the Hama Batta, Homun Gladstone Teneke as well as Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and Tabithal Pulaaku in the State.
The persistent attacks and killings of the farmers in recent times has really affected the steps taken by the Royal Fathers as well as the Associations in restoring peace and mutual understanding between farmers and herdsmen in Numan, Demsa, Lamurde among other Local Government Areas in the Federation.
At the moment, residents of some of the communities faced by such clashes who bared their minds to newsmen, said that the arms weilding herdsmen still go about grazing Peoples' farmlands without any fear more especially in communities around border between Lau LGA in Taraba State and those of Numan and Demsa in Adamawa State
According to reports, one day after the peace meeting convened by the Hama Bachama in his palace as part of effort to mediate between farmers and herdsmen, some suspected herdsmen launched a deadly attacks which claimed the life of one Bwatiye youngman, leaving one other badly injured.
One of the Victims, Mr. Kennedy Bitrus who narrowly escaped death during the attack by herdsmen on Friday, was said to be on his way from Mayo Lope, in Lau LGA of Taraba State to Bang community in Numan LGA, and is currently receiving medical attention at a health facility in Numan, Adamawa State.
A day after the incident, another attack was carried out on Saturday 17th October, 2020, by the herdsmen which led to the death of Kpalagbe, Mr David Titus of Nega Community in Bolki Ward who was shot dead by the marauders on his way to Bang.
It could be recalled that the Federation in Northeast Nigeria had suffered series of farmer and herder clashes as well as activities of criminals resulting in the loss of lives and property.
Without mincing words, the inability to resolve this lingering misunderstanding in a fruitful and mutually beneficial manner by relevant authorities, would continue to the claim lives and destroy the property of the harpless citizens.
Worried by the incessant attacks/clashes, the new Hama Bachama, Homun Dr. Daniel Shaga Ismaila (OON) and Hama Batta, Homun Alhamdu Gladstone Teneke, held series of discussions with the leadership of Fulani and the Bachama/ Batta Communities to find a lasting solution to the problem.
The effort was also aimed at complementing the effort of Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri led administration in ending such disturbances in and around the State.
Speaking during the meeting, the Bachama Monarch, Dr. Daniel Shaga Ismaila, lamented a situation whereby the attackers set entire settlements ablaze over allegation that one member of the Community had rustled their Cattle, saying that kind of approach is uncivilised and barbaric.
The Hama Bachama told the gathering that it is unacceptable and very wrong for any Bachama man to take law into his hands own either by rustling cattle or by killing it.
He appealed for restrain on the part of both parties, calling on them to strive and live together for peace and the overall development of their communities and that without peace, no meaningful development will be recorded.
In the light of the foregoing, it must be must be stated that people who reside in the affected areas will continue to live in fear of the unknown if urgent steps are not taken by the security agents towards addressing the lingering problem.
