FAWE Conducts Awareness Raising Session with CSOs on Gender Responsive Education Sector Planning in Adamawa

The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), Nigeria has organised an awareness raising and advocacy planning session for Civil Society Organisations(CSOs) in and around Adamawa State in Nigeria.

The forum is currently implementing European Union (EU)-INTPA Project in Adamawa State titled " Strengthening Civil Society to Enhance Education for all in Northern Nigeria" with support from Plan International.

The event which was held at Duragi hotel in Yola Adamawa on Thursday, was well attended by members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), School Based Management Committee (SBMC), Parents Teacher Association (PTA) and Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities.

During the event, the organisers were able to raise the awareness of the CSOs on gender responsive education sector planning and why it is important for them to join the coalition to advocate for more gender responsive and inclusive education sector plan for Adamawa State.

The stakeholders were exposed and empowered with the requisite skills which will enable them not only analyse Adamawa State Education Sector Plan but any document that will serve as a tool for delivering public good with a gender lense.

With the new knowledge, the CSOs are expected to critically analyse education sector plan and filter gaps using gender lense as well as see the need to advocate for the review to making it more gender responsive so as to enhance education for all.

This is in line with FAWE's noble objectives to ensuring that education is being provided to all irrespective of gender, geopolitical locations, socio-economic status or disabilities.

Interestingly, cross section of participants applauded the organiers for building their capacity so as to meaningfully engage relevant government stakeholders on gender responsive education as well as make valuable contributions to make the document more robust.

They further appreciated the EU and other International organisations for supporting the implementation of project in Adamawa State.

Earlier, in his presentation on "Gender Responsive Education Sector Planning" the Education Officer-FAWE Nigeria, Ibrahim Bello, said that the event was meant to create awareness on responsive education sector planning.

Ibrahim, who exposed the stakeholders on the role of gender in ensuring education for all, said under the project, they have been able to analysed the education sector plan and found out there are gaps therein.

According to him, the development of the document did not actually involve or engage stakeholders who have the technical expertise to provide more information that will make the document more effective.

He observed that the policy was silent on some of the peculiar needs of different gender within the education system be it the learners: boys and girls or the teachers or the school administration.

Ibrahim, informed the participants that FAWE is interested in the education of every child; hence, the need to strengthen CSOs and NGOs to enhance education in the society.

During the event, Aishatu Nyako and Maimuna Hammawa MT FAWE Nigeria also spoke Adamawa State Education Sector Plan and the need for advocacy.
