Abdoulaye Ahmed of Ngaundere in Cameroon Republic has been convicted by the Criminal Area Court I, sitting in Yola, Adamawa State for the offence of theft.
The Convict, Ahmed was tried by Honourable Umar Gangs, led Criminal Area Court I for stealing the sum of N45, 000, which he sent to his hometown in Ngaundere for the treatment of his wife and a child.
Ahmed who was earlier brought before the court for stealing the money in a wallet belonging to one Babangida Ali, a Driver at the Jimeta ultra modern market, admitted committing the crime.
He narrated that he met his victim in a car and asked him to buy an Amplifier, and that when he discovered that his attention was somewhere else, he picked his wallet containing the amount.
The Convict informed the court that he sent the money to Ngaundere because his wife called and informed him that herself and the child were not doing fine; hence, the need to raise money for their treatment.
He said that there is freedom and hospitality in Nigeria, and that if it is a Nigerian that was caught stealing, his punishment will be severe, adding that unlike Nigeria, freedom of movement is a very serious issue in Cameroon.
Ruling on the case, the court presided by Umar Gangs, convicted and sentenced him to 6 months imprisonment with N40, 000, option of fine, and further ordered him to refund the money to the owner.
