ADAMAWA LEGISLATORS MOVE TO END VIMTIM/POLY MUBI LAND DISPUTE

Joint Committees on Public Petitions and Works, Land and Survey of the Adamawa state House of Assembly has taken steps towards ending lingering land dispute between Vimtim Community and Federal Polytechnic, Mubi North Local Government Area.

It was against this background that the House Joint Committees under the leadership of Hon. Adwawa Donglock(Guyuk) and Hon. Haruna Jilantikiri (Madagali) on Thursday, visited the land in dispute where they met with the representatives of the host community and that of the institution.

To find a way of resolving the dispute amicably, the Lawmakers further directed the warring parties to make additional oral or documentary submissions to enable them forward their findings and recommendations to the Committee of whole for consideration.

Recall that Vimtim, a Community in Mubi North Local Government Area, in the state had petitioned the State House of Assembly where it appealed to the House to take preventive measures against possible breach of public peace between the Community and the Polytechnic.

In its petition, the Community said that crisis started when the Management of the Polytechnic refused to adhere to the boundary limits of the land donated to the Federal School of Arts and Science Mubi.

It further alleged that despite clear cut demarcation of the landmass donated, the Management of the institution through its Security Chiefs forcefully extended the boundaries, and expressed fears that the action of the school will lead to full blown war if not averted.

The petition which was presented at a resumed plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, was committed to the House Committee on Works, Land and Survey and mandated it to strive towards unraveling circumstances surrounding the dispute.

Speaking shortly after their meeting with the representatives of Vimtim Community and the Federal Polytechnic at Government lodge Mubi, the Chairman House Committee on Public Petitions and the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Adwawa Donglock, told them that the Committees were there primarily to resolve the problem for peace and development.

Hon. Adwawa said that the hallowed chamber had mandated them to come and intervene with a view to ending the lingering dispute, and said that nothing meaningful would be achieved in a chaotic atmosphere, urging them to embrace peace in the interest of all.

He called on them to forward additional oral and written memos to help the house in finding lasting solution on the issue, and thanked them for cooperating with the Committees.

Hon. Adwawa disclosed Governor Ahmadu Umaru Finitiri led administration is not leaving anything to chance towards ensuring peace in the state, hence the establishment of Peace and Conflict Resolution Commission that will address related cases.

Responding, Lead Counsel to the Petitioners, Magai V Magai and Head of Legal Department, Federal Polytechnic Mubi, Barr Ibrahim Abubakar Suleiman respectively, said that they were hopeful that the visit by the Committee will bring an end to the problem.

According to them, the meeting is important as it has provided opportunity for them to strategise on how to end the matter, expressing optimism that with the collaborative effort, peace would be achieved.
