MAN DRAGS HOUSEWIFE, SON TO YOLA COURT FOR CALLING HIM A WITCH


A man, Baltiya Iliya of Bongo Ward in Song Local Government Area, Adamawa State on Thursday dragged housewife and her son to Upper Area Court III in Yola for allegedly calling him a witch.


The complainant told the court that the defendants, Rebeccah Iliya and Hyellamada Iliya, accused him of killing Helmiya Iliya.


NEWS PLATFORM learnt that Late Helmiya Iliya, a son to Rebeccah and elder brother to Hyellamada, who was a 300 Level Student, University of Maiduguri in Borno State, died mysteriously about a month ago.


But Baltiya Iliya who lodged a direct criminal complaint against the duo bofere the court, alleged that the defendants have been accusing him as the one that bewitched their son.


The Complainant informed the Honourable Court that Rebeccah met him while he was with his father and told him that he was the one that killed Helmiya.


Baltiya asserted that the defendants have been pointing accusing fingers at him and his family members, and telling people that they should be extra careful with them because they are witches and wizards.


He further averred that the 1st and 2nd defendants connived/conspired and approached him with dangerous weapons and threatened to kill him.


According to him, the act of Rebeccah and her son amounts to defamation of character, conspiracy and intimidation contrary to sections 96, 378 and 383 of the Penal Code Law, Adamawa state.


But the when the substance of the complaints were read and explained to the defendants during Yesterday's proceedings, they all pleaded not guilty.


Thereafter, the Complainant applied for a date to enable him bring in his witnesses to prove his case, and pleaded with the court not to grant bail to the accused.


Earlier, Counsel to the defendants, R.M. Agav, urged the court to grant their application for bail, and assured that his clients will not jump bail, and that they are ready to be tried.


The Court presided over by Honourable Umar Isa, adjourned the matter to 20th August, 2020, for hearing, and granted the bail application of the Counsel with a surety who is a civil servant on grade level 14, and who resides within the jurisdiction of the Court.
