As youth in Adamawa State join rest of the world in celebrating 2020 International Youth Day, the Leadership of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), in the State has tasked governments at all levels to strive towards empowering youth and making them more relevant.
The Council however urged on the youth to take advantage of the opportunities and programmes introduced by the governments at all levels so as to benefit from it.
The Chairman of NYCN in the State, Ambassador Ajine K. Delo, stated in a press statement heralding the activities lined up for the celebration of the International Youth Day in the state on Wednesday.
Ambassador Ajine said that the Council is not unmindful of the effort of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri which is gradually reviving the lost glory of the education sector, and noted with delight programmes rolled out for the empowerment of the youths.
He expressed optimism that all that the Government has on ground for the youth will come to fruition, saying that he has no doubt things will work out well for the youth in the State.
While speaking on the situation of youth in the North East, the Chairman observed that the youth in the affected States are left in dilemma as average youth only think of alternative measures to remain relevant in the political circle with a view to getting a fair share of the national cake, hence engaging in all kinds of social vices.
On his take on the plight of youth in Nigeria, he called on them to set the pace for development in the society, and further expressed hope that the dream of youth can be achieved more especially when a holistic approach and support is shifted towards youth development.
Against the backdrop of an increasingly polarised world according to him, the international system of governance is currently undergoing a crisis of legitimacy and relevance, and stressed the need for the international community to act and provide solutions to pressing challenges such as conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.
He noted that engaging youth in the act of governance increases fairness, political stability, sustainable policies, and restoration of trust in public institutions, saying that most of the challenges confronting humanity such as the COVID-19 pandemic and host of others needed concerted effort towards addressing such challenges.
On the 2020 International Youth Day, the Chairman posited that as the United Nations turns 75th and with only 10 years remaining to make the 2030 Agenda a reality for all, trust in public institutions is eroding.
According to him, 2020 International Youth Day is designed to advocate on the need to engage youth in the scheme of things at Local, National and International level, saying this will make the institutions more inclusive.
He harped on the need to discourage over dependence and recycling of the same crop of people in governance in order to give chance for the youth to come up with fresh ideas that will support the government.
Meanwhile, the Chairman said that NYCN has lined up programmes for the Youth Day celebration include; Press briefing 12th Aug. 2020, Virtual Conference, 13th Aug. 2020, Visitation to Specialist Hospital Yola, Prayers at Jumma’at Mosque 14th Aug. 2020, Games 15th Aug. 2020, GMMC Yola, Impromptu speaking Competition UBE Hall and Prayers 16th Aug. 2020.
While it is commendable the formation of youth platform such the NYCN as touching impact in youth the country or states more is still required of the managers of the Organisation to look beyond the government in fostering and advocacy for the youth Development we expect more than the routine celebration and funfare it does appeared vision was long lost than mission it self I commensurate with the communal clash communities, and pray let us not gave up Hope that we are the future we want to see happy youth celebration.
