WOMAN BAGS 7YR JAIL TERM FOR DEFRAUDING LATE JUSTICE LAWI'S RELATIVES OF #.2MILLION

A middle age Woman, Mercy Elder, of Guyuk Local Government Area, Adamawa state has been sentenced to 7 years imprisonment without option of fine for defrauding relatives of late Justice B. P. Lawi of #200,000.

The convict defrauded the relatives of late Justice B. P. Lawi, of the money as logistics to facilitate the release of the entitlements of late Justice Lawi, who died few years ago.

According to prosecution, it all started when Mercy told her boyfriend, Jerry of Guyuk town that she was well connected to some top government officials including an ex-Deputy Governor.

The convict, according to prosecution, informed her lover about her connection with public officials when she had noticed that a younger brother to late Justice B. P. Lawi and her boyfriend were friends.

Mercy assured Jerry that she can be able to secure the release of the entitlements of the late Judge, if his friend and other family members can pay her the sum of #200,000 as logistics.

When Jerry met his friend and narrated the whole issue, he welcomed the idea and promised to brief other family members about it.

Luckily enough, when the younger brother to the late Judge, had a meeting with other family members, they all agreed, raised the money and handed it over to the lady through her boy friend.

Few days later, the lady met her boyfriend again in Guyuk town, and paraded herself as Deputy Director, Department of State Security Service (DSS).

The Convict, told her boyfriend that the Operatives of the Department were planning to arrest the  Executive Chairman of the LGC, following a petition filed against him by the then Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Sunday Peter.

She then asked her lover to meet the Chairman of the LGC and collect the sum of #250,000 from him so that she can stop his arrest.

When the errand boyfriend contacted the LGC Boss, the Chairman referred him to the Head of Service of the LGC to go and do the negotiations.

But bubble burst when Jerry met the Head of Service and informed him about the arrangement, as the HoS became suspicious and told the young man that the lady could be fraudster.

It was at this point that Jerry became suspicious too and went and reported the matter at the DSS Office in Yola. But when the DSS discovered that there was no Deputy Director named Mercy Elder, detailed their personnel and arrested.

When the case came up for judgement on Thursday, the State High Court presided over by Honourable Justice Nathan Musa, convicted Mercy for false pretence and cheating and sentenced her to 7 years imprisonment without option of fine.
