An 18 year old "Shila" boy, Abubakar Mohammed, was on Friday, convicted and sentenced to 7 years in prison for extortion without option of fine.
Abubakar of Rumde ward in Yola North Local Government Area, was sentenced to 7 years in prison by Hon. Ibrahim Musa Ulenda, of the Upper Area Court 4 sitting in Yola, Adamawa state.
The convict was earlier arrested for extorting an infinix cell phone valued N60, 000 belonging to Himage Yayirus, of Nyako's quarters in Yola North LGA on the 22nd December, 2021.
NEWS PLATFORM learnt that the convict snatched Himage's phone at T- Junction Doubeli and took to his heels into the bypass' forest unknown to him that somebody was defecating in the forest.
When the man saw the boy running and being pursued by the mob, he hurriedly rose up and grapped him before the arrival of the mob where he was dragged to Doubeli police station.
Upon his arraignment before the court by Seargent Kabiru Abubakar of Doubeli police station, the convict pleaded guilty to the count charge of extortion contrary to section 283 of the penal code law.
It was after his plea and tendering of the phone which was admitted in evidence during trial that the prosecutor, Seargent Kabiru, prayed the court to try him summarily.
Delivering his ruling, Hon. Ibrahim Musa Ulenda, convicted and sentenced him to 7 years in prison without option of fine, under section 283 sub 2 of the penal code law.
According to the judge, the sentence is in consideration of "shila" activities and other crimes in the society, and that it will serve as a lesson to others.
