ADHA ADOPTS 5 RESOLUTIONS TO END DESTRUCTION OF FARMS BY BIRDS IN GUYUK LGA



Legislators at the Adamawa State House of Assembly on Tuesday, passed 5 point resolutions in order to end destruction of farmlands by queler birds in Guyuk Local Government Area.


So far, about 120 rice and guine corn farms were destroyed by thousands of migrating queler birds in 7 districts in the LGA which may likely cause  food insufficiency in the affected communities.


According to the Honourable House, the resolutions adopted is to end further destruction of farmlands and see how possible to come to the aid of the affected farmers as earlier suggested by the member representing Guyuk constituency, Hon. Adwawa Donglock.


Part of the resolutions adopted by the lawmakers include; calling on the State Ministry of Agriculture to immediately swing into action to check further destruction on the farmlands by the birds.


The lawmakers have also called on the member representing Guyuk and Shelleng constituency at the House of Representatives to take it up with Federal Ministry of Agriculture so as to carry out aeriel spray of chemicals on farmlands to stop further damages.


More so, they called on the state government to assist the affected farmers as well as provide chemicals to be used on the farmlands with a view to ending the havoc on the farmlands and Ministry of Health to monitor and ensure that the chemicals do not cause health challenges.


Likewise, the legislators have unanimously advised the state government through the State Emergency Management Agency to supply food items and keep in stores so as to assist people whenever the need arises.


The resolution equally directed the Standing Committees on Legislative Compliance and Agriculture to liaise with the state Ministry of Agriculture, SEMA, Savannah Sugar Company other relevant federal agencies to proffer solution as well as ensure compliance and implementation of the resolutions.


This action followed a matter of urgent public importance raised by the representing Guyuk constituency and the Deputy Chief Whip,  Hon. Adwawa Donglock, at the resumed plenary on Tuesday.


Earlier, Hon. Donglock, informed the assembly that thousands of migrating queler birds have destroyed crops especially rice and guinea corn farms of his teeming electorate in several communities, and expressed fears that the invasion may lead to food insecurity.


The legislator noted with concern how the invasion/attack by the birds is causing sleepless night in the affected communities, saying that his good people have incurred huge losses as a result of what he described as a disaster in his constituency.


Hon. Adwawa Donglock, suggested about 4 different prayers to be considered and same were adopted with amendments as measures  to end the invasion, urging the assembly to act quickly in order to address the plight of his electorate.


Several lawmakers including Hon. Hammantukur Yetisuri(Jada Mbulo), Hon. Abdullahi Umar Yapak(Verre), Hon.Pwamwakeno Mackondo(Numan), Hon. Simon Isa(Song), Hon. Japhet Kefas(Gombi) and Hon. Abubakar Isa(Shelleng) sympathised with the affected farmers and made positive contributions during debate on the motion.


The members commended the sponsor of the motion and said that is what it takes for someone to be a representative and urged the authorities concern to implement all the resolutions adopted.


After contributions, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, who presided over the sitting, directed the clerk communicate all the resolutions to the authorities concern for necessary action.
