Adamawa State House of Assembly on Monday, constituted an adhoc committee with a mandate to investigate boats accidents which claimed several lives in Yola South and Fufore Local Government Areas. NEWS PLATFORM
The Chairman of the adhoc committee is the member representing Jada/Mbulo constituency, Hon. Muhammed Buba Jijiwa, while Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno (Demsa) and Hon. Suleiman Alkali(Yola North) are to serve as members.
Other members of the Committee include: Hon. Barr. Umar Bobbo Ismail(Fufore/Gurin), Hon. Japhet Hammanjabu (Verre), Rt. Hon. Kabiru Mijinyawa (Yola South) and Hon. Moses Yerima Zah(Michika).
The Speaker of the assembly, Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley, had while announcing the composition of the Committee, mandated it to properly investigate circumstances surrounding boats accidents and come up with recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrence.
He further directed the Committee to engage the chairmen of the affected LGAs, traditional institutions and enlighten them on the importance of life jackets and report to the assembly within one week.
He also directed it to visit the affected communities and commiserate with the families of the victims as well as the State Emergency Management Agency(ADSEMA) to assist the victims with necessary assistance.
This followed a matter of urgent public importance sponsored by the Member representing Fufore/Gurin constituency, Hon. Barr. Umar Bobbo Ismail.
While sponsoring his motion, the member representing Fufore Gurin, Hon. Barr. Ismail, briefed his colleagues about the incidents which claimed several lives in the LGAs.
He prayed the assembly to direct its committee to visit the communities and condole families of the deceased and also mandate the State Emergency Management Agency(ADSEMA) to visit the communities and see how it can come to their aid.
He also appealed to the assembly to direct the LGAs affected to provide scholarship to the children whose parents lost their lives more especially in Fufore LGA.
Contributing on the motion, the Majority Leader and Member representing Demsa constituency, Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno, sympathised with the families of the deceased and the entire constituents.
Hon. Kate described the incident as a state tragedy not only to Fufore/Gurin alone and urged the assembly to make mandatory for those using boats to wear life jackets.
She lamented that many of those using boats are very careless about the safety of others, insisting that using the jacket will go along way in saving the lives of the innocent citizens.
She appealed to the assembly to direct LGCs to assist in this regard, and that the Fufore LGC to take responsibility of the children who lost their parents.
Also speaking, the Member representing Guyuk constituency, Hon. Sunday Peter, commiserated with the victims and appealed for proper investigation in order to prevent future occurrence.
On his part, the member representing Yola South constituency, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Mijinyawa, consoled his constituents and attributed the incident it to overloading.
Baring his mind, Rt. Hon. Hon. Pwamwakeno Mackondo (Numan), commiserated with Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and the 2 LGAs, saying that there is need for safety on water ways.
Rt. Hon. Mackondo, prayed the assembly to domesticate a legislation to make the use of safety jackets compulsory as well as create marine inspectors to sanitize the system and monitor water ways.
Also speaking, Hon. Calvin Kefas(Toungo) advised the assembly to ensure that the ADSEMA reaches out to the communities with relief materials with immediately effect.
