ADAMAWA ASSEMBLY MAKES BIG DIFFERENCE IN LEGISLATIVE PERFORMANCE



Adamawa State House of Assembly may be leading the way in the performance of legisltive duties by charting the way forward for good governance, accountability, and equal distribution of development projects within last 100 days, as presented in a scorecard by the speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas.

Rt. Hon. Iya Abbas, who was speaking to newsmen on the 100 days of the house recently, said that taking off is always difficult but appreciated God, because within the last 100 days of the assembly, the house has been without friction which enabled them to record enormous achievements.

He declared that the house under his leadership has formulated agenda for the 7th Assembly and handed it over to a house committee with a mandate to review it and submit it to the committee of whole for implementation, explaining that the agenda which will serve as a roadmap, has captured every aspect of the state most especially critical sectors.

He said that they have stated categorically clear in the agenda that the house is not fighting the executive arm; instead, complementing its efforts towards achieving its desired objectives designed for the state and its people.

He pointed out that by the time that the Assembly is one year in office, people will begin to see the manifestation of what he is talking about today, saying that the assembly recorded tremendous achievements, but some could not be seen as some people expected.

He added that for them to have a rancour free house is a great achievement, because according to him, the 7th Assembly is the first in the history of the state to have almost a divided house in terms of party lines, stating that people never expected them to run the house smoothly, but they have been able to managed their differences.

According to him, the legislators have done everything possible towards ensuring that the state government implemented the financial autonomy of the LGCs being enjoyed today, dismissing as untrue the insinuations that the house had relinquished its power to the executive arm.

The Speaker enumerated that the house has a lot of bills at various legislative stages apart from the ones enacted so far and passed a number of resolutions on the issue of annual flooding, security challenges, snake bite in Hong LGAs among others.

The house, according to him is planning to come up with a law to support free education policy to so as avoid changing of policies by the successive administrations, disclosing that his colleagues are also initiating bills that have direct bearing on their constituents.

On his assumption of office, the Speaker said he decided to create more offices for the members to avoid a situation where lawmakers will be sharing the same office as used to be, stressing further that every member can now boast of an office accommodation.

According to him, the House under his leadership is trying to proffer solution on some issues in the House so as to have an efficient and effective staff.

On the challenges encountered so far, the Speaker told newsmen that it is a herculean task to lead among equals, but he disclosed that they have understood each other, and they have been carrying out their legislative business harmoniously.

He lamented that other problem they met on ground as government, was empty treasury and several unresolved issues, pointing out that on the part of the house, it has been runned on the same amount for the past 12 years, unlike what is happening in other states.

Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, explained further that the House is doing better and they expect it to come up people oriented bills, resolutions, carry out effective oversight function for good governance in the state, pledging their readiness to continue to remain focused on their agenda, have a cordial working relationship with executive arm in the interest of the state.
