BILL TO GUARANTEE FREE HEALTH CARE SERVICES SCALED THROUGH 1ST READING AT ADHA


As part of commitment towards supporting policies and programmes of the present administration in the state on the health sector, the Adamawa state House of Assembly is considering enacting a law that will guarantee free health care services in the state.

The bill sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, with 24 other members as co - sponsors, has already scaled through first reading at a resumed plenary session over the weekend.

The bill, according to the sponsors, is aimed at providing free basic health care services to unemployed persons under the age of 20 years, pregnant women, persons living with disabilities, persons above 65 years and children below 5 years among others.

According to the Honourable Members, the bill which is meant to amend the State Health Insurance Scheme Law No. 7, 2011, will take care of the aforementioned group of people except in the case of serious optical and dental challenges, without prejudice to the requirement of payments of the contributory scheme stipulated in the scheme.

The lawmakers disclosed that the bill will make provision for more funding for the scheme in order to achieve the objectives behind enacting it.

If passed and assented by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, it will go along way in addressing challenges faced by the citizens seeking for health care services in and around the state.

After the first reading of the bill, Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, who presided over the sitting, directed Chairman Rules and Business of the house to schedule for the bill for second reading at the next legislative day.
