ADAMAWA ASSEMBLY TAKES STEPS AGAINST RAPISTS

Legislators at the Adamawa State House of Assembly have taken steps aimed at providing a legal framework geared towards checkmating the spate of rape in the state.

The steps taken by the Honourable Members followed the presentation of a letter forwarded to the House by Adamawa Coalition Against Rape under the auspices of the Centre for Women and Adolescent Empowerment in the state.

It could be recalled that the coalition led by  its Convener, Haj. Asma'u Joda, had yesterday protested against rape within the state capital where it also sought for justice for the victims of rape.

The coalition comprises of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Human Right Groups, Women Groups and Associations, Faith Based Organisations, Women and Media.

But in their efforts towards giving the letter accelerated consideration, the state legislators through their Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, presented the letter before the resumed plenary session today, where he further directed the clerk to distribute copies of the letter to his colleagues for perusal.

Rt. Hon. Iya Abbas, who presided over the sitting said that the decision to make the copies of the letter available to the Honourable members is to enable them study it for their legislative inputs, pledging the commitment of the house towards providing a law that will address cases of rape in the society.
