Adamawa state Ministry for Local Government Affairs has stressed the need for a quarterly assessment of the performance of the 21 Local Government Councils by the state House of Assembly.
According to the ministry, quarterly oversight function on the performance of the LGCs will make them strive hard to deliver on their campaign promises, saying this will go along way in improving the living standard of the people at the grassroots.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Kennedy B. Dauda stated this while receiving the Chairman House Standing Committee on Local Government Affairs, Hon. Umar Nashion Gubi(Nassarawo Binyeri), who led other members of Committee on a familiarisation visit yesterday.
He said now that all the 21 LGCs have been given their financial autonomy, there is the need for the House of Assembly to visit them on quarterly basis, explaining that the visit will put them on their toes and make them work for their teeming electorate.
He asked the House to give the ministry little powers to be able to sanction any erring LGC boss and make recommendations for proper action to the executive Governor, saying this will checkmate the excesses of the LG Chairmen.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Umar Nashion Gubi said that the Committee was at the ministry to get acquainted with the activities of the Ministry.
Hon. Umar stated that the visit was in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended and stressed the need for partnership for the progress of the Ministry and the state in general.
He pledged the readiness of his Committee to intervene where necessary for the progress of the MDAs under the Committee.
