Adamawa State High Court sitting in Yola, the state capital has today sentenced 2 Staff of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to 42 years imprisonment for bribery.
The convicted staff of the electoral body include; Ibrahim Mohammed Umar and Sahabo Iya Hamman and that their jail terms according to the court will run concurrently.
The court further ordered the Inspector General of Police, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Interpol to produce former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison Maduweke for her to face prosecution.
Both the convicts and the former minister who is now at large were charged to court by the EFCC in connection with #362million disbursed by the ex-minister during the 2015 general elections.
Delivering a judgement, the court presided by Justice Nathan Musa said that the offence has a mandatory provision and sentenced the INEC staff to 21 years imprisonment each.
Justice Nathan declared that in view of the plea by the counsel to the defendants to temper justice with mercy, and said that all the jail terms on 3 count charges for each are to run concurrently.
Reacting on the judgement, counsel to EFCC Gombe Zonal Office, Barr.Abdulhamid Mustapha Labaran, said that the case is all about corruption and involving the total sum of #362 million used in bribing INEC staff during the 2015 general elections.
Barr Labaran said that the court has passed a very sound judgement and that the anti graft agency is happy with it, saying that the commission will do everything possible to produce the former minister minister as ordered by the court.
