PARTICIPANTS LAUD ADHA/MINISTRY, HARP ON SYNERGY FOR GOOD GOVT

Participants at a 3 -Day Induction Workshop organised by the Adamawa State House of Assembly in conjunction with the Ministry for Local Government Affairs have lauded the spirit behind organising the workshop which equipped them with legislative knowledge.

According to cross section of the participants, the legislative knowledge bequeathed them by the organisers will aid them in their official engagements towards good governance at the grassroots, and harped on synergy between the executive and legislative arms of government for the development of the state. 

The induction workshop was organised by the House in collaboration with the Ministry for elected Councillors, Clerks and Sergeant at Arms of the 21 Local Government Councils in the state.

Held at Lelewal Motels in Yola, the Adamawa State Capital, the induction workshop attracted the targeted participants, Leadership and Staff of the Assembly as well as the Ministry.

Earlier, in his opening remarks, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, stated that the House of Assembly and the Ministry decided to organise the induction workshop so as to build the capacity of the participants to effectively carry out their constitutional duties.

He congratulated the newly elected councillors and emphasised on the roles of the legislature in democracy and service to the people, stressing the importance of understanding the centrality of legislature in democracy.

Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas challenged them to brace up for the task ahead to enable them justify the confidence their electorate repose in them, and be resolute in confronting anything that might want to threaten their constitutional responsibilities.

Also speaking, the Deputy Speaker of the House and Member representing Numan constituency, Hon. Pwamwakaino Mackondo commended the wisdom behind the event.

Hon. Mackondo called on them to avail themselves with the opportunity provided and equip themselves with knowledge pertaining lawmaking business to enable their LGCs provide good leadership for the people.

Baring his mind, the Chairman House Standing Committee on Local Government Affairs and Member representing Nasarrawo Binyeri constituency, Umar Nashon Gubi, said he was confident that the Councillors came on board with the zeal to provide good governance to their electorate.

Hon. Nashon told the gathering that their desire for change could not be achieved without knowledge on the modus operandi with which to carry out their constitutional responsibility, hence the invitation of the competent hands to equip them with the required inputs.

According to him, the workshop was timely bearing in mind that the participants have just been elected into office, and appreciated Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the Speaker and other Honourable Members and the Ministry for their support and cooperation.

In a keynote address, the Commissioner Ministry for Local Government Affairs, Hon. Mohammed Umar disclosed that the workshop is coming at the right time so as to enable the newly elected councillors know their roles/functions at the Local Government level.

Hon. Umar explained that training and retraining is very critical to the success of every government most especially to the legislators at the LG level who enact laws that have direct bearing on the lives of the people at the grassroots.

In his paper entitled, "Responsibilities of Councillors to their Wards" the Chairman House Committee on Women Affairs and member representing Verre constituency, Hon. Abdullahi Umar Yapak tasked them to strive hard and provide the greatest happiness to the greatest number of people in their various wards.

Hon. Yapak observed that councillors' responsibilities must result in improving the living condition of the people through the provision of portable drinking water, motorable feeder roads, effective and responsive healthcare delivery.

In his vote of thanks, the Clerk to the House, Ahmed Musa Gaude thanked both the organisers and the participants, appealing to the participants to put into practise the knowledge acquired during the workshop for the development of their LGAs.
