ADAMAWA: COURT SENDS HOUSE WIFE TO 2 YEARS PRISON


Demsawo Area Court sitting in Yola, the Adamawa State capital has sentenced a 45 year old housewife, Fatima Abubakar to 2 years imprisonment for being in possession of stolen property.

The convict, resident of Sangere FUTY in Girei Local Government Area was earlier charged to court for being in possession of stolen property contrary to section 317 of Penal Code Law 2018, of Adamawa State.

According to the prosecution, on the 9th October, 2018, one Abdullahi Bello and Ali Musa, residents of Sangere FUTY conspired and went to the house of one Hassana Salisu and others and carted away some valuable items including Gas Cooker, Generator, TV set, mattresses and bedsheets among others.

The suspects who are now at large had sold the stolen items to Fatima who reside at the same compound with Hassana, the victim.

It added that the convict bought the property from the suspects with her knowledge that the items were stolen from somewhere.

Trouble started for Fatima when she washed her clothes including the stolen bedsheets and put it on the wall of their house unknown to her that they reside at the same compound with the owner.

But when Hassana saw it hung on the wall, she was able to identify it as her bedsheet carted away with other valuable items in the past.

Hassana was said to have alerted her neighbours and later the police who arrested the victim and subsequently arraigned her before the court on 31st January, 2018 for prosecution.

Delivering its judgement on the matter during the week, the court presided by Magistrate Mohammed Abdullahi Digil, sent Fatima to 2 years in prison after pleading guilty to the offence with an alternative fine of #50,000.

Magistrate Digil further ordered the convict to pay the sum of 96,500 to the complainant being the value of the stolen property.
