Midlu Community under Sukur District in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State has sought the House of Assembly's approval towards reversing the name of Sukur District to its original name of Midlu District.
The people of community who stormed the premises of House of Assembly with various inscriptions Thursday, demanded the intervention of the House of Assembly so as to maintain status quo.
Presently, Sukur District in Madagali LGA comprises of Midlu Shalmi, Midlu Vapura, Midlu Chakawa Wulla and Sukur itself.
Speaking while presenting their case for consideration by the House, the Chairman Midlu Development Association, Mr. John Thliza, said that they collectively worked for the creation of the district which was subsequently gazetted in 1983.
The Chairman told the Speaker that the district along with many other political administrative and civil structures were later abrogated by the military after the December, 31st 1983 coup, saying that following its creation in 1991, the district was mischievously and surreptitiously changed to Sukur district without consultation.
Mr. Thliza explained that the change of name was spearheaded by a single individual of Sukur ethic extraction without consultation with other ethnic groups in the district, and that it stirred up the ongoing controversy and rancour threatening the peace in the area.
He added that the name Midlu is the name of an area made up of many nationalities and ethnic groups, though predominantly inhabited by the Margis, auguing that the name Sukur on the other hand is a single tribe and people.
According to him, the justification for the creation and the naming of the district as Midlu district at inception was the need to make the district an all inclusive one for all the communities that reside in the area.
Changing the name from Midlu to Sukur district, according to him, was not only unfair, unjust, insensitive, but malicious as the name Sukur district presupposes that the inhabitants of the area are all of Sukur ethic extraction.
He further appealed to the House to correct the injustice so as to set the records straight, urging the House of Assembly to caution whoever threatens to cause disaffection in the area.
Responding, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, thanked them for the confidence they have in the house; hence bringing their grievances before them.
Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas said that all the members of the 7th Assembly had been voted by the people at the grassroots and have the mandate to intervene where there is dispute without fear or favour.
He assured them that they will look into their case in its entirety and come up with solution that all the inhabitants of the district and beyond will be happy and continue to live peacefully.
He told them that as from next week, the House Standing Committee on Petition will look into the issue after which the house will get back to them as soon as possible.
