NOTORIOUS "SHILA" BOY WHO NARROWLY ESCAPED DEATH SENTENCED 6 YRS IN PRISON



A Yola Magistrate Court in Adamawa has convicted and sentenced an 18 year old, Umar Isa, of Jambutu ward to 6 years imprisonment without option of fine.


The presiding judge, Japhet Ibrahim Basani, convicted the youngman after he was tried and found guilty of criminal conspiracy and theft contrary to sections 60 and 276 of the state penal code law, 2018.


Umar Isa, was dragged before the court for snatching a phone from a lady known Grace Lazarus, of the Jambutu ward on the 5th September, 2021 at about 12:00 pm.


NEWS PLATFORM gathered that Grace encountered the convict while on her own way to the house in a tricycle shortly after sunday service in Jambutu.


It was learnt that the convict stopped the tricycle conveying her and one other passenger, and pleaded with the tricyclist to take him to a nearby junction to pay him the sum of N20.


The tricyclists agreed and asked the youngman he had thought to be innocent to enter the tricycle where he entered and met Grace and one other passenger.


Few minutes later, Umar who could not even reach his destination,  asked the tricyclist to slow down so as to enable him get down.


While the tricyclist was making effort to slow down, Umar who kept an eagle on the young lady and her phone, snatched the phone and jumped out of the moving tricycle. 


But unfortunately for Umar and fortunately for Grace, he jumped very close to where the police were patrolling. The girl and the other passenger raised alarm which attracted the attention of the police and the general public who arrested him there and then.


When arraigned in court by the prosecutor, Sergeant Kabiru Abubakar, on Monday, the convict pleaded guilty after which the prosecutor called the victim who testified in court as witness and applied for accelerated trial.


While in court, the unrepentant "Shila" boy confessed that he narrowly escaped death when himself and his friend invaded a house in Jambutu in 2020, narrating that his friend was apprehended by the mob and killed on the spot, but that he was lucky enough to escape for his life.


Ruling on the matter, Magistrate Japhet Ibrahim Basani, held that the prosecution has proven its case against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt and slammed him 6 year jail term without option of fine.
