17 YR OLD WIFE GETS 10 STROKES OF CANE FOR STEALING RAM IN YOLA

A 17 year old House Wife, Fadimatu Yusuf, on Friday, received 10 strokes of cane for stealing a ram.

A Yola Criminal Area Court 2, in Adamawa state gave the order following a guilty plea by the defendant.

Fadimatu, of Nasarawo ward, Jimeta Yola, was arraigned on a count of theft which contravened section 276, of Penal Code Law.

The accused pleaded guilty to the offence.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Danjuma Hamidu, told the court that the defendant had committed the offence on the 23rd September, 2021, by 1:00pm.

Inspector Hamidu, told the court that the complainant, Agnes Nehemiah of Saminaka opposite EYN Church, Yola South Local Government Area, reported the matter at the Jimeta Police Station on the same date.

He informed the court that the monetary value of the ram is not yet known, and that luckly enough, the ram has been recovered.

According to him, Fadimatu was arrested sometimes in the past for stealing her first husband's money as a result of which she was divorced, saying that when she was apprehended and brought to Jimeta Division, she was pardoned due to her age.

But while taking her plea, the teen house wife told the court that she stole the ram so as to sell and raise money in order to go to her grand father in Biu LGA, Borno state, saying "this is my first time of stealing".

Delivering his judgement following an application for summary trial by the prosecutor, Honourable Nuhu Musa Garta, ordered that she should be given 10 strokes of cane for stealing.

Nuhu Garta, declared that though the prosecution had said she is a habitual criminal, the court had considered her plea of mitigation of punishment, her situation and status in life, and that instead of convicting her, she should be given the strokes of cane.
