Yola Criminal Area Court 2 in Adamawa state on Tuesday, convicted and sentenced a 25 year old Bala Hassan, to 2 years imprisonment for insulting Nigeria Police as thieves.
Honourable Nuhu Musa Garta, of the Criminal Area Court convicted the young man after he was tried and found guilty of the offence levelled against him..
The convict was earlier dragged before the court by the Commissioner of Police, A. A. Alhaji, for allegedly insulting all police officers attached to Jimeta Division as thieves.
Bala, was quoted in the First Information Report (FIR) tendered in court by Inspector Danjuma Hamidu, as saying he better die than join Nigeria Police Force whom he described as criminals.
He was apprehended on the 20th September, 2021, by 8:00 pm in Yola, during crime prevention patrol led by Inspector Ishaya Buba, attached to Jimeta Division.
He was arrested while in possession of dry leaves suspected to be indian hemp, and was unable to give satisfactory account of himself neither his residential address.
When brought to the Divisional headquaters for further investigation, the convict rained curses on the police, saying all of them are nothing but thieves, and that it is better for him to die than join them.
While in court, Bala, could not deny insulting police when the substance of the offence he was alleged to have committed was read and interpreted to him, saying that the allegation levelled against him is true.
Thereafter, the prosecutor, Inspector Danjuma Hamidu, applied for summary trial of the defendant having admitted committing the offence.
Ruling, Honourable Nuhu Musa Garta, convicted and sentenced him to 2 years in prison with an option of N50, 000 fine, while composition N40, 000.
