Chief Vunobolki: A Legacy of Food Security and Livelihoods
By Peter Cheman Koti
Chief Maurice Michael Vunobolki’s name has become synonymous with resilience, recovery, and food security in Nigeria’s northeast.
His leadership of the World Bank–assisted North-East Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP) marked a turning point for communities devastated by conflict, displacement, and hunger.
During his tenure, Chief Vunobolki oversaw the distribution of farm inputs, improved seedlings, and agricultural tools to thousands of vulnerable households across Adamawa and neighboring states.
These interventions were not mere handouts; they were carefully designed to restore dignity and self-reliance. Farmers who had lost everything were given the means to cultivate their land again, and widows and youth groups found renewed hope in agriculture.
The impact was profound. Millions of people, directly and indirectly, benefited from these efforts. Local markets revived, food prices stabilized, and households that once depended on aid began producing enough to sustain themselves.
To this day, many of those beneficiaries continue to enjoy more dignified livelihoods, a testament to the sustainability of his vision.
Chief Vunobolki’s achievements did not stop at seed distribution. He championed the solar-powered upland irrigation initiative, which covered 5,000 hectares across five local government areas in Adamawa - Madagali, Michika, Girei, Mayobelwa, and Numan.
This innovation allowed farmers to cultivate crops year-round, breaking the cycle of dependence on seasonal rains and dramatically boosting food security.
Equally important was his focus on empowerment. Women and youth were prioritized, trained in modern farming techniques, and equipped with mechanized tools.
Many transitioned from subsistence farming to becoming recognized mechanized farmers, a leap that transformed their economic standing and social identity.
Beyond agriculture, Chief Vunobolki’s leadership extended to livelihood restoration programs. Vocational training, small business grants, and community infrastructure projects were rolled out under his guidance, ensuring that recovery was holistic and communities could rebuild not just their farms, but their futures.
His legacy is one of vision and compassion. Through combining infrastructure development with human capacity building, Chief Vunobolki created a model of integrated recovery that continues to inspire.
The northeast, once synonymous with crisis, now carries stories of resilience and renewal, stories written in the fields of Adamawa and beyond, and stories forever tied to the leadership of Chief Maurice Michael Vunobolki.
To whom much is given, much is expected. Let’s give this gentleman an opportunity to govern the land of beauty so he can transform Adamawa to the Eldorado of food security and livelihood.
