YOLA FLOODING: PERM SEC, SSG TRADE BLAME AS HOUSE C'TTEES ARE DUE TO VISIT COMMUNITIES


The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Works Adamawa state, Eng. Muhammed Suleiman and the State Surveyor General (SSG), Surveyor Pwavidon Simon, have traded blame over the root cause of flood disaster that wrecked havoc in some parts of Yola, the Adamawa state capital recently.

The Perm Sec and the SSG along side other relevant stakeholders appeared before the joint House Committees on Works, Land and Survey and Environment as summoned by the house to come and explain the reasons behind the recent flood disaster in the affected areas.

It could be recalled that the flooding which was caused by heavy downpour in the affected areas, according to reports, claimed several lives and sacked many from their homes in Jambutu, Bachure and Saminaka among other places.

It was against this background that the house of assembly on a motion on matters of public importance by Hon. Hamidu Sajoh Lekki(Yola north constituency) resolved and invited the ministries and other relevant stakeholders to come and deliberate on what actually caused the flood disaster with view to proffering a lasting solution.

But speaking at meeting at the meeting, the Perm Sec Ministry of Works alleged that the problem of flood disaster are mainly caused by illegal developers on water ways, and that once these problems are not solved, they will continue to experience flooding.

He advised the general public to be wary on building structures on water ways and that water ways must be allowed to flow freely.

Eng. Suleiman said right from the fence behind Yola International Air port, the place has been blocked completely and that even households owners have been dumping refuge in the drainages.

He appealed to the house of assembly to enforce the regulation of development control which is under the State Urban Planning and Development Authority so that anybody found building on water canals, the building should be demolished.

On his part, the State Surveyor General (SSG), Surveyor Pwavidon Simon, said that the office of the Surveyor General is dedicated to the core values of service, and professionalism and raised concern on the building of structures without consulting relevant authorities for monitoring and evaluation.

But the Chairmen of the House Committees on Works, Land and Survey, Hon. Haruna Jelantikiri(Madagali constituency) and his counterpart of Environment, Hon. Abdullahi Umar Nyako(Toungo) who presided over the meeting, resolved and put an end to the meeting, informing the gathering that the committed will visit all the affected areas today to have first hand information on the causes.

The Chairmen said that after the visit, the committees will recommend to the whole house on the kind of actions to be taken, staying if its happens that the committee will recommend for demolition of illegal structures to solve the problem, they are well prepared to do so.
