Adamawa State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Health and Human Services rose from a one day Engagement on Health Bill with a resolution for government to emphasize on the removal of hindrances to the realisation of a vibrant healthcare delivery system.
The stakeholders further harped on competence in the recruitment of health personnel within the health sector, and the provision of modern health care facilities to meet the health care needs of the citizens in and around the state.
The event which attracted cross section of stakeholders in the sector, was organised by the House Standing Committee on Health and Human Services headed by Hon. Hamidu Sajoh Lekki (Yola North) in conjunction with International Republican Institute (IRI) and held at the Committee room of the House yesterday.
Some of the organisations that attended the meeting include; Ministry of Health and Human Development, Primary Healthare Development Agency(PHCDA), College of Health and Technology, Michika, College of Nursing and Midwifery, Yola, Specialists Hospital, Yola, Adamawa State Health Insurance Scheme, Adamawa State German Medical Center(AGMC), Adamawa State Hospital Services Management Board, Adamawa State Essential Drugs, State Agency for Control of HIV/AIDs and several non governmental organisations.
With a view to achieving of the set objectives of the meeting, the participants deliberated extensively on the merits and demerits of the bill, hence the aforementioned resolutions.
The bill tagged" a Bill for a Law to Regulate the Minimum Standard of Healthcare Facilities " which was floated by the Speaker of the hallowed chamber, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, was aimed at regulating the kind of health facilities to be used by health institutions in the state.
Earlier, speaking while declaring the meeting open, the Speaker of the House of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, told the gathering that it is in accordance with the standing order of the house which stipulated that bills should be referred to relevant house committees after second reading for scrutiny.
Rt. Hon. Iya Abbas said that the bill has been committed to the Committee on Health and Human Services because it is health related, and that the house is expecting the committee to finish its legislative work and report back to the committee of whole.
According to him, the sole aim of passing any bill by the house is for it to be implemented, describing the bill as significant considering the deplorable condition of health infrastructure in the state and how it intends to address it.
The Speaker who was represented by Hon. Abubakar Isa(Shelleng) congratulated the committee for organising a historic stakeholder engagement and commended the participants for their contributions towards making the bill more comprehensive.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Committee and Member representing Yola North constituency, Hon. Hamidu Sajo Lekki observed with concern how health institutions in the state are nothing but consulting centers.
Hon. Sajo Lekki said the standard of health facilities in the state has denied their electorate from accessing affordable and quality health care delivery service, explaining that the house decided to proffer solution on the situation, hence the floating of the bill, and that his committee will make the bill more effective.
He said that his committee expected the stakeholders to contribute positively in making the bill more comprehensive so as to complement the effort of the Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri led administration in reviving the sector.
Hon. Hamidu Sajoh Lekki, stated that his major concern as Chairman of Health Committee is to ensure that citizens have access to quality health care delivery system in and around the state.
Several stakeholders who spoke at the event, presented both oral and written inputs and commended the House Committee for organising the meeting.
