Apparently worried by the recent clashes between herdsmen and farmers in some Local Government Areas in the state, the Adamawa state House of Assembly has taken steps towards curtailing the clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the state.
To this, the hallowed chamber has adopted 7 point resolutions with a view to ending the clashes between the herders and farmers in Hong, Gombi, Song, Girei, Yola South, Demsa, Numan, Mayo Belwa and Ganye Local Government Areas and other parts of the state.
Parts of the resolutions adopted by the House include the urgent need for state Government to direct Local Government Councils to convene security meetings and extend same at the wards level.
The House of Assembly further resolved and directed traditional institutions to be reporting the activities and movement of the strangers in their domains, and for the Government to regulate grazing in the state.
The legislators also directed the Local Government Transition Committee Chairmen to regularly report to the Chairman House Standing Committee on Security, the measures they have adopted to ending herder and farmer clashes.
Equally, the Honourable Members urged the State Government to provide more vehicles for both Local Hunters and the police for quick intervention in an emergency situations.
While resolving to look at the existing laws that established the statutory bodies to that effect, the House appealed to the Government to as a matter of urgency provide relief materials to the victims of the attack by herdsmen in Hong Local Government Area.
The resolutions adopted by the Members followed a matter of urgent public importance sponsored at a resumed plenary session today by the member representing Hong constituency, Hon. Bathiya Wesley.
Earlier, Hon. Bathiya who is also the Chairman House Standing Committee on Education, briefed his colleagues on the recent attack by herdsmen which affected no fewer than 30 people in his constituency.
Hon. Bathiya told the House that about 30 people in his constituency were badly injured while over 150 farmlands destroyed by the herders in some parts of his constituency.
According to him, worst hit LGA by the clashes in recent time include: Hong, Gombi, Song and Girei LGAs and lamented that the clashes have far reaching effect most especially on the economy of rural dwellers.
He appealed to the House of Assembly to take serious action with a view to bringing an end to clashes at the rural areas, urging the hallowed chamber to mandate relevant authorities provide relief materials to the affected communities in his constituency.
Also speaking on the motion, Hon. Simon Isa (Song Constituency) said it has reached a stage where most of farmers in his constituency cannot go to farm because of treats to their lives, and advocated for the deployment of security agencies to curb the treats.
Hon. Simon Isa lamented that the herders graze for 24 hours while destroying farm produce which according to him, it has become a source of concern to them, saying something urgent needed to be done about it.
On his part, Hon. Japheth Kefas(Gombi) advised the state government to provide enough patrol vehicles to the security agencies, saying that if care is not taken the menace will hold the state for ran some.
Baring his mind, Hon. Abdullahi Umar Yapak(Verre) lamented a situation where year in year out Adamawa state records such clashes, and called on the executive arm to take necessary action in order to nip the situation in the bud.
Also speaking, the member representing Ganye Constituency, Hon. Alhasssan Hammanjoda said that the primary responsibility of the government is the maintenance of security of lives and property of the citizens, and however commiserated with the victims in Hong.
While commenting on the motion, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Hammantukur Yettisuri ( Jada Mbulo) advised the House to mandate the Local Government Councils to liaise with relevant stakeholders with a view to ending the clashes.
After contributions from the Lawmakers, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas who presided over the resumed plenary session directed the clerk of the house to communicate the decisions of the House to the relevant authorities.
