As Adamawa state women join the rest of the world in marking the International Day for the elimination of violence against women and girls, the Adamawa state House of Assembly has vowed to enact laws against violence related offences in the state.

The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, made the promise while receiving the Honourable Commissioner Ministry of Women Affairs, Hon. Lami Patrick, who led the delegation of government and non governmental organisations on a campaign to ending violence against women to the assembly yesterday.

Rt. Hon. Iya Abbas told the delegation of the readiness of the House of Assembly to enacting laws on violence against persons, saying that the hallowed chamber is ready to pass/domesticate Violence Against Persons Prohibited Act 2015, Child Right Protection Act and Gender Equality and Opportunity bill as requested by the Commissioner.

According to him, there were moves to pass Child Right Act bill when he was member in the house in 2015, but both the 2 major religions kicked against it, explaining that as representatives of the people, they must do what they want and advised them to educate the society on the importance of some of the bills.

In her remarks, the Member representing Demsa Constituency, Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno, stressed the need for the restructuring of Child Right Act bill so as to see the light of the day, saying that there is no way parents would not discipline their children.

Hon. Mamuno appealed to them to support the house so as to enable them pass some of the bills that directly affect them and however appreciated them for the visit.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Lami Patrick said 25th November, to 10th December of every year is globally dedicated for campaigns to end gender based violence against women and girls.

Hon. Lami Patrick told them that they are coming as a generation standing against rape, saying that they cannot effectively fight rape without having policies and laws in place.

She told the Speaker that the passage of the aforementioned bills as she requested will go along way in preventing and checkmating all forms of gender based violence in the society.

She commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and his wife, Hajiya Lami Umaru Fintiri, for pledging a zero tolerance on rape and other gender based violence in the society.
