ADHA MOVES TO RESCUE COLLEGE OF AGRIC GANYE, ADOPTS 3 LIFE SAVING RESOLUTIONS

Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, Speaker ADHA

In its move to address the plight of the only state owned College of Agriculture, the Adamawa state House of Assembly has today enacted about 3 life saving resolutions to rescue the College of Agriculture Ganye.

The Honourable Members have unanimously resolved and appealed to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri led administration to urgently intervene towards ensuring the accreditation of the 10 Courses /Programmes being undertaking by the College.

According to the Lawmakers, without the accreditation of some of the Courses by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the College cannot get any grant from Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

Equally, the Legislators urged on the State Government to provide infrastructure needed by the institution as well as help and develop the permanent site of the school so as to compete favourably with other institutions.

The State Legislators have further mandated its Standing Committees on Legislative Compliance and Education headed by Hon. Alhassan Hammanjoda (Ganye) and Hon. Bathiya Wesley (Hong) respectively to liase with the college to find out its problems for further presentation to Fintiri.

The adoption of the resolutions followed a matter of urgent public importance brought before the hallowed chamber by the Member representing Leko Koma constituency, Hon. Abdullahi Ahmadu at a resumed plenary session presided by the speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas today.

Earlier, Hon. Ahmadu briefed the Honourable House on the nagging challenges believed to be affecting the college from attaining its set objectives, saying that it will be difficult for the school to develop without addressing those problems.

The APC Lawmaker told his colleagues that the  College was established on the 31st January, 1992, and cited in Mubi, and that with the establishment of Adamawa State University(ADSU), Mubi, by the administration of former Governor Boni Haruna, the College was relocated to Ganye in 2004, and formally moved to Ganye in 2008, by former Governor Murtala Nyako.

Like any other College of Agriculture across the nation according to him, the institution was established primarily to train junior and middle level man power needed to service various agricultural enterprises in the state including Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock Production and the Department of Natural Resources at the Local Government level.

He added that the institution was established to serve as a center of adaptive research with a focus on tackling agricultural challenges, provide job opportunities for field personnel as well as equip and update them on latest innovations in the sector.

He further lamented that despite the significance of the institution to Adamawa, none of the 10 certificate and diploma Courses/ Programmes has been accredited, and called on Fintiri to wade into the matter in the interest of the state and its citizens.

As at today, he said that the permanent site of the College is yet to be developed, and lacked needed infrastructure to match the status of tertiary institution, explaining that the repercussion of none accreditation of the Courses, improving the infrastructural standard of the school is that both the certificate and statement of results will not be recognised by any institution outside the state.

Worst of it according to him, none of the graduates of the college will secure job opportunity outside the state, adding that the college cannot run Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes of the existing courses, and that there will be poor enrolment of students which will affect the internally generated revenue of the state.

Hon. Abdullahi Ahmadu told the House that apart from one of the campuses of the Adamawa State Polytechnic situated in Numan Local Government Area, the College of Agriculture Ganye is the only higher institution in the southern part of the state with Nine (9) Local Government Areas.

Contributing on the motion, the members representing Ganye and Verre Constituencies, Hon. Alhassan Hammajoda and Abdullahi Umaru Yapak described the situation of the college as unfortunate, and called on the government to look into the matter with a view to addressing them.

The duo applauded the sponsor of the motion for raising the matter, and said it is high time to improve the standard of the college, saying addressing the plight of the school will not be in the interest of the college only but the state.

Likewise, the member representing Guyuk constituency, Hon. Adwawa Donglock threw his weight behind the motion and pleaded with Governor Fintiri to do everything and address the problems of the school.

After contributions from the members, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas who presided over the sitting, directed the clerk of the House of Assembly to communicate all the resolutions of the Legislators to the executive arm for action.
